I found this deal but noticed the Iv: 50-100mcd rating and I was wondering if these leds would be bright enough or even work with ledtriks....
Red Diffused LED - Indicator LED - 1000PCs[BSRD202W50BC05] $10.99 (http://www.besthongkong.com/product_info.php?cPath=4&products_id=30)
1000PCs of Super Red 3mm Diffused LEDs
Vf: 1.80V typ, Iv: 50-100mcd
Viewing Angle: 50-60 degree

Or should I just stop being cheap and get the recommended LEDs

the cheaper ones are only 3mm compared to the 5mm of the recommended ones. 5mm fit pretty good in standard pegboard where with the 3mm you will have to drill your own holes for mounting.

The cheaper ones are 50-100mcd (millicandela) according to that link.

For nine dollars more, you get 2000mcd LEDs.

I'm no expert, but that sure sounds like a heck of a difference in brightness to me.
