I just received my 2 ren 24ss in the mail, and now the fun begins. I have been lurking around the forums for months now, and I believe I have enough knowledge to be dangerous. Please confirm if I understand a few things correctly. I plan on running mostly LEDs so I plan on using the firmware for that on one board. My mega tree will still be using incan so the other board will run with regular firmware. As far as power goes I see that there is a bridged power option or split power. I would imagine on the LEDs the bridged option is probably enough? Since I haven't started playing with vixen yet, are there any settings to run the boards one led and one not, or is that taken care off with the pic. I am throwing around using some rainbow floods as well can this be daisy chained on the same chain as the wrens or does it need a separate input for the dmx. I was thinking about buying the rainbow brain to power these. Is that silly or should I just build another renn with dmx dingle? Feedback appreciated

You can run a mixture of PWM (aka LED) and non-PWM FW on the same board if you wanted to as well. However, you can run PWM FW on all the PICs whether LED or incan and it will run just fine. The non-PWM saves on power used by the board (not the lights) but that's not a concern with the RenSS boards.

"Just got your feet wet?" Nahhhh.... you've jumped into the deep end...
With the SS boards, you've picked a rock-solid, great system to start your display. It's extremely well documented, it's easy to assemble (of course, careful soldering/assembly is important with any electronic device) and quite versatile. It will provide you with years and years of fun.
Welcome to the craziness that never ends!!!

A suggestion... just put the PWM firmware on all of the PICs. The SS boards were designed with that in mind. ;) Saves you any confusion in the future and if you have to make any last minute changes.

Thanks that is probably what I will do. I haven't ordered my parts yet. Just saw the group buy for them will probably get in on that. If I decide to run The rainbow floods do I need to do that on a separate input?

You can't run the RF's off of a RenSS board as it is a DC device. You can use one of the DC controllers like the Ren24LV, Ren48LSD or a DCSSR with Ren64XC/RenSimple. The RF can be run from the Rainbow Brain as well from the same place as where you get the RF's - it is DMX only however...
