http://www.christmasatthegoods.com/Training/index_files/Page954.htm has a good overview of operations in Audacity.

Are you looking to put the CD in your computer and get the music from it, or put it in a standard audio CD player that's hooked up to your computer via line in? If it's the first case, then you'll be better off getting a program to 'rip' the contents of the CD (Windows Media Player might even do it for you depending on copyright protection stuff).

AFIAK, Audacity can record anything it can "hear", regardless of the source. It can record CD's from your PC, audio from Youtube, Vimeo, iTunes, Amazon, etc., and export it as an MP3. You just tell Audacity the source to record from, and be sure to turn the 'mic' up, and the 'speakers' way down, or you will get some terrible feedback.
