View Full Version : End-to-End strands...

Hello all.
I was just wondering. When they say you can only connect so many strands end to end, does it mean that many from male to female ends, or could I plug in 1 male plug into another male plug, and each plug having like 3 strands in it, would that be the same as having 6 strands in a row?
Your knowledge is appreciated.

If you're talking about the warning on the lights then it's male to female.
If your talking about the amount of light strands per SSR channel then it's total amount of strands.

So what you're saying is if I plug one male end into the female side of the male plug on another strand, then it's the same as having 1 strand in terms of the warning label?

You are correct. Here's a little diagram that I just threw together to confirm what you are saying (and I'm thinking).

Thanks ppohlman, but I believe brian is right about this one. Nice drawing though, I do appreciate the effort. And thank you brian for making me just that much less confused!

That diagram is incorrect. Both scenarios is considered 2 strings end to end as the fuses in the male plug protect both the lights, the female end and the female side of the male plug.
I have to disagree, I just took 2 strands of lights removed the fuses from strand 1, plugged strand 2 into the female side of the male plug on strand 1 and plugged in the fuseless plug into an outlet. Strand 1 did not come on as expected but strand 2 did come on. I'm using the "holiday time" 100 count mini lights from wal-mart.

Dan is right,
The fuses connect to the string that comes out of the middle of the plug, but the spades on the other side makes direct contact with the other spades inside the body. I'm going to saw one of these in half here to make sure I'm not tellin lies :)

Ok, so if it bypasses the fuses additionally, what, may I ask, is the point of having the fuses in the first place. Seems like the strands are made cheaply. Brian, your wisdom is always welcome any time!

OK I answer myself, the fuses still protect the strand they're on. But Brian, would this be an exception to your statement if the strands are like this pic above?

I guess I stand corrected. The pic above indicates the drawing above would be correct.

I wonder if all plugs are like this, though... I suppose there's only one way to find out? :D

I'm glad someone actually cut one of those open. I was wanting to, but I didn't have a spare one sitting around and I couldn't find anything online.
THANKS

Couldnt you take out the fuse and put like a small nail in place of the fuse and connect more than 3 strands...
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO Never take out the fuses and replace them with anything other than a properly rated fuse!!!!!!!!!!!!!To do so would be reckless and risk property and LIFE!
I do not think I can make it any clearer! I would suggest you edit that post and erase the quoted statement.

Good point Brian, we put fuses in lights for a reason people. And besides, didn't we just prove that you could connect more than three strands? Also, if you look at the rating on the fuses its like 3A, so you could push a bit more on them end-to-end, the safety people probably just have to say 3 so that somebody doesn't plug in 8 or 9 when in fact its capable of only 5-7 (But that's pushing it even.)
