I have updated the forum software to vBulletin 4. This is the most recent version.

I know it is a vastly different look and will take some time to get used to but things always change.

I will be continually working on the layout and look of things to make them a bit more appealing.

If anyone has any constructive ideas or suggestions please let me know, via PM.

If anyone notices I missed something somewhere or something is missing or not working please let me know, via PM.

edit:
for the time being to get to the wiki go to http://www.doityourselfchristmas.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
and to get to the chat go to http://doityourselfchristmas.com/forums/chat/flashchat.php You will have to log in using your DIYC username and password

Brian,

The site is throwing errors on some links. The "New Posts" off the forum sub header menu (Link: http://doityourselfchristmas.com/forums/search.php?do=getnew&contenttype=vBForum_Post )

Throws the following error:
Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@doityourselfchristmas.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

New Posts not working here either, get the same server error page.

iPhone reader Tapatalk isn't able to connect either. Going through withdrawls - twitch, twitch...

I don't claim to be an expert with PHP but if you have server error logs and want to PM the last dozen or so lines, it might help isolate where the issue(s) might be.

Everyone will experience the New Posts error until I fix it. I am aware of it and am looking into it.

The home page is just the default, I will customize it as soon as possible.

Tapatalk needs to be updated on the server end as the software is new and requires a different version of tapatalk. Its on the list.

Although the forums looks vastly different they are navigated the same way as before. They only look different. I am not 100% happy with the look so it is on the list.

I am working as hard and as fast as I can to get this all worked out. It is part of the upgrade process.

Remember what happened to Computer Christmas because it was never updated?

Everybody - let's be patient! It's not easy changing system software while hundreds of users are hammering-away at it at the same time, but we all know how responsive Brian is. If something isn't working there's a good likelihood he already knows about it and is working on a patch. A week from now you'll find things have really settled-in.

What happened to my display? It took me forever to figure this out, but for some reason now my posts are backwards. It is workable, but annoying.

OK, good news and bad news.

I was haing an issue with what I think is some apache issues on the server. There was an issue where a process was causing a dump very often. To the point that I had hundreds of core files at about 50mb each. That was a major issue but I think I may have solved that.

Now if I am correct and that is solved I can look into the News Posts and Search errors.

Now the bad news. I have until tomorrow to make a big decision. If things are not running smooth I have to revert the entire site to the last full backup and we may lose a few days of posts. If that is the case things will go back exactly how they were. I do have a db backup from the other day so it should not be too bad. Not the way I want to go but an option I only have until tomorrow.

Brian:

I too am in the middle of upgrades (going from PHP4 to PHP5 and MySQL 3.something to 5.0.86 -- still not the most recent, but at least not circa 2005) on a dozen sites and so share your pain.

I have been installing multi-user systems since Jimmy Carter was in the White House. My philosophy has always been to tell the users to suck it up and forge onward. Rolling back would lose a bunch of postings and we would still have to go through an upgrade at some point in the future.

As Farragut said, damn the torpedoes -- full speed ahead!

I can always trudge through the sub forums to find something interesting so take your time. I don't think anyone is in a hurry. So if it takes two or three weeks to figure this out, I think everyone here is understanding.

I do not want to wait to long if I have to revert it back, the longer I wait the more posts we lose. We can not utilize the db as it is now, if I was to revert it, as the new software changes some tables.

It appears everything is functioning with the exception of the search function. The search function includes more than just the search button. We are looking into it.

I do not want to customize any templates until this issue is resolved. As soon as I change something the powers to be will simply point a finger at the change as causing the issue. I am sure you all know what I am talking about.

On the home page with the bad link, the image address (for my user) is: http://doityourselfchristmas.com/forums//forums/customavatars/avatar2221_1.gif

On a page with a good link, the image address (for my user) shows as: http://doityourselfchristmas.com/forums/customavatars/avatar2221_1.gif

I'm sure you are relieved to have things updated. It looks good.

Anything that uses the Search capability (New Post, Quick Search, User Posts Search, Advanced Search and even a few others) will not work until the "Search" is fixed. Let's give him a chance, I'm certain at this point he is aware of every major issue.

Just remember while Brian works on the finishing touches and irons out hte bugs, Google advanced search (you can tell in to search at http://doityourselfchristmas.com/forums) still yields pretty good results

Google helps with searching, but not with viewing all posts since the last time you visited. Is there a work-around for that besides manually checking all the forum sections for new posts?

EDIT: I guess I need to read the older posts to get the work-around. :P

NUDDER EDIT: The Google URL is very helpful! By changing from "qdr:d" to "qdr:m", I see that it can also go one month back. That is helpful, since I am way behind in reading posts. :(

It's a partial work-around, I guess. You have to look at each forum, and you'll see the "new post" icon at the front of each thread that has been updated. Clicking it will take you to the first post you haven't read in that thread.

It's not as good as the "New Posts" button, but it keeps me from having to re-read a lot of old posts. :D

Something I just noticed. When you click on the file libraray from the homepage. Then try and click on the VBulletin link or pretty much any other link for that matter. The links are broken. Again, let me point out that insidious .htaccess file/files. Every time I have been nailed with 500 errors, they either come down to a server that was about to crash (which I don't think this is), or something stupid I had done in my htaacess file(s).

Since the 500 errors aren't on EVERY page, the structure of the files (or at least the main one in your html root dir) is OK. That leads me to believe it's a 're-write'. mod_rewrite allows the server to look at all incoming http requests, and 'reformat' them. For example, here are the rewrites I am currently using for sequencecenter.com (until I have it set up on its own domain):

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^sequencecenter.com$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.sequencecenter.com$
RewriteRule ^/?$ "\/main\/component\/option\,com_remository\/Itemid\,54\/" [R=301,L]

If I made an error with any of that (forgot a \, etc), my main site would still work. However, if someone were to request www.sequencecenter.com, it would 500.

The same thing could be happening to you with the search function for new messages. You may have a line in an .htaccess file that is trying to redirect/reformat the search for new messages. It worked for the old software, but doesn't for the new. Voila - 500 error.

I have never found an easy way to test .htaccess files. For me the only thing that works is to create a new one, and copy the parts in I know work, then play around with the parts that don't until they do.

Here is the problem: You could have more than 1 .htaccess file. It is perfectly acceptable to have one in every directory (the effect being the merging of all the files in the tree, where the lowest level wins).

I was trying to help Brian yesterday a little bit, I don't think it's an .htaccess error because of what apache is telling him. I am guessing newline problem, stale file from the old version of vBulletin, or something strange in the database.

The other 1% updates perfectly, but crashes within three weeks of the update.

As an update

It seems the errors are isolated to something on the server end. The host is looking into the issue. I am guessing something in mod security or suhusion or whatever it is called.

I have installed and setup a completely separate forum with a new database. All testing and troubleshooting will be done on that install. So you may not see much activity here and that is a good thing. I do not want to break it any more than it already is.

Being as how it appears the search problem is the server and not the software I will try to get the "customizations" back up. Little things like the chat and wiki links are bigger than they seem to be.

chat has been available....if you have trouble finding the link i have it in my signature....i aggree you can meet alot of people...its also handy for explaining how to do things especially if you having a hard time understanding what the problem is .... it would probably free some gibberish and gobble in the threads. if you could see who is in the chatroom.

Brian,
Noticeable changes have been slow recently. I'm not implying you're lounging about. Are you going to add the "Who's on Chat" to the front page again? as one who is unable to sit on chat endlessly, an indicator would be good.

I am looking into some chat alternatives. The system we use, Flashchat, appears to have been abandoned by the developers.

Important Note:

I no longer use Flashchat (and havent for over 18 months).

The development and support of Flashchat at Tufat.com appears to have died in 2010 - the site owner has not been seen for almost a year, and even the developer who took over F/C version 6 has not logged in for at least two months. The last [beta] version was 6.0.8, released in June 2010.

Therefore after almost 6 years of supporting Flashchat Integration with vBulletin, I have decided I can no longer support my Flashchat modifications. I do not have it installed on my test sites anymore.

Anyone who wishes can of course continue to use them, and they should continue to work quite happily in 4.1 [for the moment]. However, any future issues caused by vb style or code changes may break them, and will most likely remain unfixed.

It's not just Flashchat, it's EVERYTHING he does. One of my sites used his 'Easysite' script. We found TONS of bugs, documented them all, and even documented fixes for them. It's never been updated. That was about 5 years ago.

I don't mind giving someone a few dollars (and frankly $5 is a GREAT deal for most stuff), but when it doesn't work it's not a deal.

Can we get a link for "Today's Posts" in addition to "New Posts" - it's kind of handy to look back at something I may have posted previously to but then have to remember where it was. I don't know if the criteria is since Midnight (local/GMT?) or just the past 24 hours (probably the latter).

michaelc

Brian, I found the easiest way to do that is to go to the SETTINGS tab to see all the posts you have not replied to yet then selecting the button down for "VIEW ALL SUBSCRIBED THREADS". This lists all the threads you are monitoring with the latest on top.

The New Posts tab will show all recent posts in reverse chronological order for about 100 posts, that is 5 pages.

How far back should the New Posts tab go?

I am not sure what the difference would be from New Posts to Today's Posts.

budude
04-28-2011, 04:30 PM
When you click New Posts, it does provide a dialog to review posts within the last 24 hours (which I admit I somehow did not notice) - but if you click that immediately, you get the dreaded 25-second between search dialog and the 24 hour option is not shown. So - the only option is to click "New Posts", hope there isn't any new ones since you want the "last 24 hour" thing to show up, wait 25 seconds and then click it. Yes a workable but annoying work-around...

I know we used to have a Today's posts button before (or perhaps I'm thinking of PC...) but it would be nice to have a singular link for that purpose. It can be in one of the sub-menus as well... Unless I'm missing something let me know.

I was just on the chat, nobody else was there so I chatted with myself again. You never realize how boring you are until you talk with yourself. The upshot of my conversation with myself was that both of us (myself and I) thought the chat worked well and was pretty cool. I hope more people use it. I'm going to go back there and see if I'm still on. Maybe I'll have something interesting to say this time...

TimW

Hi Dirk

I also just logged in to see what I had to say (Neither of you were there unfortunately....). Someone, (not me) said 'welcome'. That was nice. Then I was alone with myself. We agreed that the chat was nice and that we should get out more.

The nicest thing about the other chats is that you knew who was in there before you engaged. Both of us hoped that this would be a feature.

I wondered if the lack of people in chat was due to not knowing who was in there. If people knew I was there they might drop in to say hi. Then I responded that the opposite was probably true .

I had to leave the room agreeing to disagree with myself....

Matt_Edwards

Firstly I must admit I am not a chat junkie.
But every time I have jumped on to try it out it has been empty. It appears my BO scares them off or something.
I tried a couple of Slaps and a Meow or two, but still no one came to play.
I like the format of this one, but the old one use to tells who was in Chat before you entered. that was a lot better than the format change.

Hope you work it out.

Macrosill
04-29-2011, 08:20 AM
The old one told us who was there a long time ago. That feature has not worked in some time.

If we stay with the new chat system that feature will be back. I have not done any integrating yet because I have not decided this is the one.

Tried chat today for about a half hour. 6 or 7 others were on. Conversation was erudite yet light, although everybody agreed I was still boring. I had two offers to take some "chat lessons" but I had to turn them both down. No money. Blew it all on leds in the CDI pre-season sale.

EDIT: Just went on and chatted with myself again. Yep, suspicions confirmed. I am very boring.
