Strobe LED Size

I've been reading most of the threads on the LED strobes that you have built. Most of the LEDs that have been used are 1/2 or 1W, but I haven't seen one thread that tells what size LED to use. Should I be looking for 5, 8, or 10mm. And, what about the viewing angle? I've seen strawhat, 140 degree.... I just don't know enough about the LEDs to know if I'm getting the right one for the job.

Most people have been using 8mm straw hat LEDs. Than using C7 covers over the LED.
Fathead did have some C7 covers and may still have some left.
