I'm thinking towards next Xmas's display.

I have a couple of Ren24 boards, with each channel is running a single string of LEDs, I'm guessing a maximum current of 100mA or so. It seems wasteful to have those big 2-4A triacs being used to just drive 100mA.

I'd prefer serial comms and Renard protocol.

Can I just get a Ren24, leave off the triacs, and run a string of LEDs off the output of the opto-coupler?

If not, is there a controller design out there that meets my specs?

Look at the Ren24 LV or Ren48 LSD.

It aught to work. I haven't done any experiments with LED strings so I don't have any experience to back it up. I've driven single C7 bulbs directly off of a MOC3021 opto and haven't had any problems. These draw a continuous 50mA.

There are no heat-sinks on the optos so you have to be careful not to overdrive them. Mildly excessive current didn't seem to damage them, they just stay on. Turning of the main voltage and letting the opto cool a moment allowed it to function correctly again.

If have the time, try it and report back the results. Take precautions in case of failure so you don't burn up anything you want to keep.

A single strand of LED's is either 20mA or 40mA usually, 20mA for 25 count, 40mA for 50, 60, 70.

USUALLY. Check with an ampmeter
