Hello Everyone
I am trying to program a new chip with my Pickit 3 from Sure Electronics and every time I go and power on my programer it says this:
Target Device ID (00000000) does not match expected Device
ID (00001180). This is the Kit I have http://www.sureelectronics.net/gallery.php?id=1141&img=6112
I am running MPLab IDE v8.60 I have followed the PDF and still get the same results.

Are you in the coorect socket on the Zif socket board? You should be in the middle sized Zif.

Have you set the PK3 to supply power to the chip? I think it's off by default.

yes that is turned on. I followed the pickit 3 PDF to a T. This is why i am so confused.

The "000000" error is when the chip is not found, either due to no connection or no power.

I believe you should be using the 20 pin zif socket and make sure pin 1 of the pic matches up to pin one of the socket.

You should be using the 20 pin one. I had the same problem when I first got mine - I took it apart and started metering lines until the light went on - I was in the wrong socket!

What was the issue? Was the chip in the wrong socket?

Well it was multiple things one being the wrong socket and part of it was that it was thing to be powered by a usb hub which by the way can't happen apparently.
Just so you all know I can now program my own pics.

OK, cool. Thanks for the update. A good point for everyone to learn from this experience is about powering the programmer off a hub.

FYI - I have a Pickit 3 and yes you can use a hub but it must be an externally powered hub. This is particularly true when using many brands of laptops. With my desktop I was able to use a standard (non externally powered) hub with no issues. I believe it was pointed out in one of the threads here that many laptops do not supply adequate power to the USB ports for these programmers to function properly.
