Make sure your parallel port is set to EPP mode. Second best choice is ECP. That usually helps a lot!

Try every mode you port has. There is no single mode that works on all computers.

Also, check the computer's I/O memory address for the port. If it's not "normal" for that port, you'll have to use special settings in Vixen. For example, LPT1 is normally set in as 0378. If yours' is not the expected address, it could create problems.

Also, if you're using an USB LPT port, that won't work as the 595 needs the hardware trigger signaling. USB "simulates" it via software. To Windows programs it may seem the same but to the 595, which is expecting specific electrical signals.

im using an actual parallel port and can get the basic 8 channel to out of vixen so im guessing the port is set up right but i dont think im getting the pulses from the pins 1 and 14 not it the data bit 1 flashing at all it just seems to be on all the time. i don't know allot about the parallel pots so im not real sure what to look for.

Have you done a continuity check between the plug end and the wire end of your cable for pins 1-2-14 and you have a good ground? Sometimes the most confounding problems come from using parallel cables/plugs that are missing connections we commonly expect to be there.

Just an FYI for those trying to help out kendogg. I worked with him to ensure that his parallel port was working. he has downloaded and understands (I think) the basics of parmon.exe. From our discussions, his PP is working properly in ECP mode. I know nothing at all about the olsen board or anything, so I cannot help him beyond the output of the PP.

i put a resistor on pin 2 of the pp and the controler worked for about 2 cycles then went back to flickering but when the test sequence goes to all off all of the second 959 lights up. (im only using 2 595's right now to test b4 i build the whole board)

ok so it was a grounding issue well more od an ID 10 T problem i didnt ground pins 13 not that i had
done that it turns of and on like it should however i made a simple sequence where each channel it on for about 1.5 seconds and i just go down the line from 1 to 8. the problem is when only channel one is suppose to be on the first 2 r on then lights 3-4 will light up with chanel 2's out put and so on. any ideas?

im just really afraid of blowing any 595 i dont have many left
