This PCB only co-op will close Feb 28th.

Details about the design can be found here:
http://www.ritzfam.com/xmus/

Prices will be similar to last time, each PCB will cost about $7 to $10 each plus shipping and paypal fees. (Price depends on volume).

I am not selling parts, but they will cost about $47 for each 16 channel dimming board. However if you participate in the parts co-op (by JaysonH) you might expect parts for around 30 each kit.

Shipping will be 2-3 day priority mail box with insurance and electronic delivery confirmation. This will cost about $4.60 to $6.50 per order depending on weight. International orders add $10 for me to drive to the post office, and the additional shipping fees. I can not insure international orders, and I will not be liable for shipping damage or loss to international locations. I will ship using "Global priority flat rate envelope" (7-10 days).

Paypal fees are approximately 1.3% plus 30 cents, and those exact fees will be passed onto you.

Do not send any money now. I will collect money in March, when prices are finalized.

WJOHN has agreed to support the REN16 COOP. He is involved with the RENARD C and RENARD 64 designs and general PCB support to DIYC over the last 12 months. WJOHN is a strong supporter of the REN16, having used them in his own displays in 2007.

Thank you,
Dave

Xmus just a side question is there any plans to update the PCB so it will pass the Zero cross through if it is comming down the cat5. This would make it easier to chain different renards without having to make sure the 16's are at the end of the chain.

I could do that, but then I would need to order proto PCB's, and buy parts for the proto's, and I'd expense that to the project...... (Total cost of about $200 split between everyone.

At this point the only change I'm making to the PCB is to add the "powered by Vixen" logo (If I can figure out how to, in Express PCB)

How many people would like to see the change above?

You guys realize that you would just need to solder a wire from "3" to "3" and "6" to "6" to accomplish this on todays design correct? (3 and 6 are near both RJ45 jacks)

That is what those pads are for.....

Dave,

I'm a newbie to Christmas controls, but I'm a sucker for nifty electronics projects. I've always wanted to put together something to control a Halloween or Christmas light and/or animation setup, but lacked the time to design one from scratch. However, this design is much like what I would have chosen to design, had I had the time to do so.

Using RS485 communications seems like the best way to go, from a technical standpoint -- you can't beat the robustness of differential serial comms over twisted pair. The fact that the Renard design uses RS485 in a "daisy-chainable" fashion, *and* allows full dimming control on every channel, really sold me on this design. And as a bonus, having the SSRs on board in reasonable numbers seems like a much better setup than building a whole bunch of 4-outlet SSR boxes.

At "$7-$10 each plus shipping", I can afford to buy more boards than I will need up front, and then simply buy parts to populate them when I need them to expand. Please put me down for eight boards, and let me know the exact price when the time comes to pay for them.

Thanks for putting together this COOP!

- Rick Dickinson

Hi Rick, gotcha down. Your assumptions look good, yes, you can populate the boards later. All the various designs have their strengths and weaknesses, and I don't mean to talk negatively about other designs, they DO have there upsides, but I love having one robust enclosure for what would be 4 SSR enclosures. Obviously I loved the idea enough to put a LOT of time into this design and COOP! Again, the other designs are great....

Dave,

I wasn't so sure about you design when you first introduced it this year, I didn't really see the need of the on-board SSRs at the time but now with the addition of the Bazooka tube, I'm sold.

Count me in for 6 boards.

Hi, the "Theory of operation" pdf has been updated, it now has a section on how to pass ZC through the XMUS board.

Is there a limit u want to reach xmus

Well just a big guess -> we are over 100 now, so we are nicely into quantity pricing. No goal, last year we ordered 184.... I just want everyone to have plenty of time to get their orders in, and adjust quantities if needed.

Hopefully with the document I published about how to pass ZC through the XMUS board, no modifications will be required to the PCB, so the only change I will make, is to add the silk screen for Vixen, and then there will be no development costs this round.

By the way, the ROV (ESD protection device for the 12v power rail) is in stock at mouser again.

For power supply I use a Radio Shack 12v 1.5amp regulated wall wart and wire it inline with the CAT5 cable. That will drive a string of about 8-10 boards on one serial port if placed in the middle of the run.

Ahhh...I'm starting to track better now. I found http://christmasinshirley.com/wiki/index.php?title=Renard_Standard_Setup that answers that too. I had it stuck in my head that if you sent the 12VDC down the cat5, that you would not be able to do ZC. I think at this point, I just need to get some boards and electronics in to do some soldering and then melt it until it works!!!

xmus
12-18-2007, 12:47 AM
there are 8 wires in the cat 5 (the theory of operation doc goes into great detail on this, just a review here):

2 for serial
2 for power (12v)
2 for ground
2 for spare.

The spares can go 1 to power one to ground or for ZC.

(Again, high level summary)

CP1... the Ramsey is a good unit, I use one myself. Here is a thread about it and some assembly tips with pics.
I also reccommend that you purchase a PIC programmer. If you have someone program the pic's for you and you need to do a firmware change, then you will have to send them out to have this done. I have done programming for other members, but do think everyone should have their own. :)

In researching this board, it seams that the most popular and documented way to connect the power to the board is through a single 15 (or 20) amp circuit, which is then "daisy chained" between the first 8 channels and the second 8.

Is there anyone who is using 2 seperate 15 (or 20) amp circuits to power the board -- one for first 8 channels, and the second for the second 8 channels?

In reviewing the design, it appears that this could easily be done -- but was wondering if there is a reason against doing this?

Thank

I agree with you, it would appear the traces on the PCB could handle 20 amps on each side.... but i haven't exploded, i mean, experimented with that yet, so I'm not sure we know for 100% sure.

Muttley, and all

Xmus had orginally quoted that

prices will be similar to last time, each PCB will cost about $7 to $10 each plus shipping and paypal fees. (Price depends on volume).

I dont see that we wont be able to get down to that price, I'll work with my manufacturer to do the best we can. Combining shipping with some other boards, at the same time, is fine with me.

The current End Date for the Coop is Feb 28, I'll keep to that schedule. At the rate we are going, I expect we could hit the 500+ boards and get the price down to low end of the range.

The boards will be ROHS, 2 oz copper, up from 1 oz copper last year. this will give the 'heavy' users a little bit more safety margin on the tracks.

Thanks to Xmus for getting us started, I am looking forward to having more XMUS16s in my yard this year.

John.

What if I had an immediate need for some SSR boards? What if I had some questions on the Ren-C's boards I just recieved? (Don't laugh 'cause I do).

This will be my first year with computer controlled lights for Christmas; I have done Halloween displays with pneumatics with simple electronic triggers. I love the electronic aspect of the Christmas light display.

I have spent a lot of time researching on which board to use; taking into account my display layout, easy of use, controllability, and support.

The Xmus 16Ch Renard seems it will work the best for my needs. Count me in for 10 (ten) boards, just advise me on the total cost and date of payment.

Not sure. I would advise in this case to get more boards than you need. The cost is not that much. Later if you decide you'll need more you can populate the boards as needed. (That is where the majority of cost will be. Then all you have to worry about is back ordered items needed to populate) If the boards are not available though,... you may be out of luck.

Ok, Looks like we have a fairly full list of COOP participants.

Next Steps,

Confirm participants (the COOP has been open awhile and people change their needs) - due date 8 Mar

Confirm prices (based on numbers) 10 Mar

Request payment - 16 mar

Submit order for processing 17 Mar

Bulk order shipped to me, End March

Individual orders sent to COOP participants NLT Mid April.

Not sure. I would advise in this case to get more boards than you need. The cost is not that much. Later if you decide you'll need more you can populate the boards as needed. (That is where the majority of cost will be. Then all you have to worry about is back ordered items needed to populate) If the boards are not available though,... you may be out of luck.

Leon

I will hold extra boards after to COOP, but to be fair, they will be at a different price as I wont be ordering lots of 400 ;-)

Still anxiously wanting 6 boards, thanks!

(I'll be out of the country March 16 - 20 so if you could advise the cost as early as possible that would be great so that I don't miss out)

I'm still in.

I read the timeline, but is there going to be opportunity to change some things based on final pricing? I mean I'm good for 10 no matter what, but if pricing comes in lower, I may up it to 15 or more.

thanks again

Regarding parts....

When I have ordered from Mouser in the past I know that I can create a "project" that I can later order / re-order as needed. Does anyone know if this "project" could be shared with others? It would save us all a lot of time if the first one to order parts created a sharable project!

Don't know about sharing the project myself, but I ordered parts at the beginning of Jan. Unfortunately, my BOM included parts saved as a project at Mouser and Jameco.

I'd share mine if possible, but the project would be incomplete.

Check this link out:
http://www.ritzfam.com/xmus/16CPicDimmedSSR_Parts_List_Rev1.9.xls

It's got the BOM with all optional parts and Mouser part numbers. I would have given you my project list, but like tonypgst I ordered from both Mouser and Jameco. Saved some cash that way.

I know you guys are itching to get started. All in good time. I for one wouldn't mind a break. For some strange reason all my coops are hitting me at the same time. Ouch!

Well, I have money burning a hole in my pocket over here. Have it saved for the boards, but there are so many temptations out there, it's hard to keep it saved away.

I'll be patient, but honestly, my Ren16 parts need a home and my new soldering iron is bored. :)
