I was wondering if someone could help me, I want to build some MR16 but I dont want to install the expensive MOSFETS and I was looking at the Ren48LSD and I saw that it was using cheaper devices to control the LED lights. So basically what I was wondering is could I use mouser part number:
863-MPS2222AG (http://gb.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?qs=ZpPixqFcBtxlHcpibrm4%252bw%3 d%3d) instead of 844-IRL530PBF (http://gb.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?qs=cvaI6ThkwxvxpzLbQNN3Cw%3d%3d ) in the MR16. I know that they are different sizes but im sure I can work my way around that.
Thanks

How much current are you looking at? And are the parts going into an existing board design, or is a new design/layout?

This is RJ's MR16 he was talking about - but - yeah - good question - how much current do you need? The MR16 has a low current option where you don't install the MOSFETs and use the onboard TLCxxx chips to drive your outputs (maybe 100mA? less - not sure). You'll probably have more luck asking this question on the DLA board since that's where the board originates.

I heard about being able to power smallish things through the chip, it would be less than 100ma I think but I was just thinking it would help keep the chip running at low power and also gives me some more power capability's. It wouldn't be more than 600ma as I know the part I want to use as a replacement can only handle up to 600ma.
Thanks steve

Is it going into an existing board (as budude implies)? If so, is there provision on that board for a series gate/base resistor?

Follow-up...you might want to just use a cheaper FET instead. There are a variety of MOSFET parts in the mouser catalog that are quite a bit less expensive.

It would be going on the MR16 (http://diylightanimation.com/wiki/index.php?title=Manual_MR16)board, from what I can see there is a cap and a resistor before the mosfet. I looked for a cheaper option but it was still quite expensive, would the 863-MPS2222AG work? Or would I need to change the resistor ratings? I'm not looking to use any major power but I just dont want to run the chance of the overheating the TLCxxx chip.
Thanks

I would again suggest you post all of this on the DLA site to get the best answers. There are no schematics of the MR16 available to determine how the board is wired up and any suggestions would be pure conjecture and may result in muchos magic smoke being let out. If RJ cannot provide you the answers you want, than I would probably suggest going a different route entirely.

I'll second the motion...
