I need to place an order from Digi Key and wanted to get driver chips for the Grinch/LedTriks, but Digi Key has a minimum order of over 1K units for the Allegro A6279.
Does the ST Micro STP16DP05 appear to be a suitable substitue? (http://www.st.com/stonline/books/pdf/docs/13093.pdf)
It appears compatible to me...

Sure does look like it, let one of the guru's chime in. Only way to know for sure though, is to try it.
That is an excellent find. It appears to be a clone of it and I would expect from the little chance to look it over that it would be a great replacement for both the grinch and ledtriks.

Another part that I've used on a Grinch is the STP16C596B1R, which is a little bit cheaper from Digikey (not that either part is cheap). I used it with the Ren-C converter, and have not done extensive testing with it.

Biggest problem I see is that it doesn't seem to come in a dip package, so how are you gonna make it fit?

I looked on mouser and found this
http://www.mouser.com/search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=STP16DP05B1Rvirtualkey5112000 0virtualkey511-STP16DP05B1R
Says it comes as a DIP-24 package. Even though the minum is 460 I would order them and ship to whoever wanted them.

It would cost less if you bought 500, rather than 460 (500@1.42 < 460@1.62).

Ben, If you bought the 460, I would buy a few of them from you. I'm not sure you could unload all 460. That's a lot of chips.

It may not matter; according to the link above, Mouser has '0' in stock... unless of course, he bought them out
