View Full Version : Slow page loads or time outs

FYI, I've had the same weird connection problems for the past 2 days, usually around noon-2pm EST. Mostly time outs or really SLOW (5+ mins) page loads. I even got a server misconfig screen that wasn't a 500 error.
----------
Bandwidth:
My Christmas site typically does about 10G per month. Starting this month that will go way up, and this year will probably be worse with all the new sequences I have up for download. Last year the site did 16G in Oct, 28G in Nov, and 30G in Dec. It drops to normal levels in Jan. Feb is usually 1/2 normal - everyone must be sick of Christmas. This year it was about 4G.

FYI...
Right around Noon today (again), the site went down. I first noticed it at 12:40, and everything was timing out. Around 1:10 it started working again, but was VERY slow (and still is as of now). According to 'downforeveryoneorjustme.com', it wasn't just me.

FYI:
For us users -> You can go to http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com and type in the DIYC address. It will tell you if it's just you who can't get to the site, or everyone.
For the admin side, you can try this: http://www.siteuptime.com/ . They have a free account that will check your site every 30 mins (or for $5/mo every 5 mins). The free account may be enough, or it may be worth it to spring for the $5 plan for a month.
(I have no affiliation with either service other than having used them in the past)

Thanks Dirknerkle for the suggestion! Re-booting my modem appeared to correct the problem, so there must be a problem at my providers end, maybe the cache marking the site as not available for some reason. Thankfully all still fine now :-) Terry

Also have them look at what is happening on Monday. I went through all the messages and noted the days of the week. Out of 11 days worth of problems, 6 were on Sunday (like you said), and 4 were on Monday.
That's pretty statistically significant: 4 out of the remaining 5 problem reports says there is a problem there too.

I noticed it last night and several times today too. Most of the time when I let it load it eventually came up with an internal server error (just really slowly). Perhaps certain topics have been repeated so many times on here that the server decided to start processing infinite loops, or perhaps it got bored without all the activity on that one joke thread and decided to calculate Pi or something.

I was reading that a large htaccess file could also slow a site. especially if there are a lot of blocks with host names instead of ip addresses as the site has to try and resolve the host names and wait on DNS responses..not that this is the problem just something to look at.

In my day job we use godaddy hosting solutions and are pleased with the performance. They purport to scale with the traffic and we have some heavy loads and don't notice much of an impact during those times. Might be worth a shot.

We were once with GoDaddy and they did not offer some features we needed to fully support the site so we had to move. One of my favorite songs I found by listening to the GoDaddy hold music. The song Hell from the Squirrel Nut Zippers. That is the cd they play for their hold music, at least they used to, it's been a while.

Maybe add a new supporting member category that's priced at $40 or $50/annually. Doesn't get you any more access or privileges but perhaps the extra revenue would pay for most if not all of a dedicated server.
I'm in.

For me, there is a significant difference between yesterday and today. Much faster today. Did you reboot?

That's a good idea, there may be people that would donate more if there were the option.

Actually I would be in for $50 per year, but would suggest the higher membership fee come to 300/400 PMs.

Another great suggestion!
and the ability to rename our tag - instead of "Supporting Member" we could put Grand Poobah or something...
I'll pay $50 - no problem.

Put me on the list for $50. If thats all it cost me a year to keep this going, I'm definitely in.

Brian moved the site last night to a new server and it has a new IP address. The new IP address is still propagating around the internet. It is possible that your PC / Browser has cached the old address, you may need to clear your cache or reboot your computer to get the new address.

I use to be able go get something to drink while a page loads. Now I can read everything that's new and actually go do something else. Now I don't have an excuse for not getting anything done. :p
The only issue I see is this weird multi colored thing that jumps around the message entry window when it loads.
