View Full Version : Strobe LED group buy interest thread

Matt (FatHead45) and I have discussed via PM the possibility of a Group Buy for LEDs for the TPR1 strobes that came out of the AUS forums.
There are two major choices - .5 W and 1 W 8mm StrawHat LEDs.
Single unit pricing for these are as follows:
1 W Strawhat Cool White - $1.50
.5 W Strawhat Cool White - $1.09
In quantity, these prices drop about 50 cents for both types, but you need an order of around a 1000 LEDs to get those quantity discounts. And pricing is usually better than the posted web site prices from past experience. 1000 LEDs should be easy given the number of folks buying PCBs.
So, I thought I'd start an interest thread for LED's for the strobes.
Indicate how many LEDs you would be interested in. If there is enough interest, we'll quickly organize an official group buy.
I'd prefer to limit this to just the 8mm .5W and 1W LEDs. Color options would be warm white or cool white, but I'm thinking most folks will want cool white to look more like a Xenon strobe.

I'd be in for 120 of the .5W, assuming the price drops. I'd really like to see it below $0.50 for each one. If you don't mind me asking, what's your source for these?

Who's your source? Cause I know Ray Wu over at aliexpress has much lower prices listed, and most people at auschristmas are happy with his results.

50 of the .5w, assuming they get down to 50-ish cents.

My source is the same one that I used for the Mighty Mini LED buy. I haven't bought much from Ray, but hear good things about him. However, my supplier has been excellent in getting good quality LEDs, in different colors/sizes, and I haven't found a bad one yet.
Prices at the last buy were in the $.50 range for the .5W and around a $1 for the 1 W.
See the MM Group buy thread for more info - I'd rather not go posting websites in lots of posts...

I see that no one wants the 1w. Like 3 aspirin instead of 2, isn't more power better? :)
Seriously, is the extra power requirement something to be concerned about? I wouldn't guess it's a heat issue since they're being used as strobes and are not on all the time.

I'd be interested in 60 .5W cool white if they end up in the $.50 range.

A few comments:
1. The 1W LED will be twice as expensive as the .5W, based on most pricing that I've seen.
2. The current draw of the 1W is 3x the .5W - 300 mA vs. 100 mA. Not that the LED is on much of the time, since it's a strobe, but you still need to take that into account. Some of the LEDs folks may be looking at have the .5W at 150 mA, but the ones that I'm considering are 100 mA.
Given that most folks are planning 100-200 units, the cost and current reqs add up quick, even if they are on separate channels.
Note to folks that have asked about 1W - as far as I can tell, the price will always be at least 1.5-2x the price of the .5W LEDs. So don't expect prices in the $.50 range for 1W. Given the interest level already, pricing on the .5W will be no more than $.50. This is the cost of the LEDs - shipping and fees would be additional.

120 of the .5 watt cool white if the price is < $.50 which I'm sure it would be from the previous post quantities.

This may be a different option. Ray has posted the 1 Watt 8mm Straw hat LEDs for 69 cents each (or 65 cents for orders of more than 1000). Now the quality has not been proven yet but thats a significant saving on the 1 watt LED and also the 0.5watt.

Matt is going to be running this buy. His source for the LEDs may be different than any of the ones that were mentioned in this thread.
So any comments that were made about pricing, quality and website for the LEDs should be disregarded until more information is available in the official group buy thread.

Check the output of the LED. I suspect you'll also find that 1W isn't double the light output of .5W. If I wanted more light, I'd try to run 2 .5W LED's in series and increase the supply voltage so that there is enough. This will give double the light output, but also the current of the .5W LED rather than the 3x current needed for the 1W single LED. Lower current, means smaller wire can be used as well.
I'm interested in 100 Warm and and some Cool as well. I may want to try and experiment to see how some of the Mighty Mini works first before making a decision if possible.

put me down for 30 .5w white. Thanks.
Just to make sure I am keeping everything clear, Matt (Fathead45) has not opened the actual LED group buy yet, correct?
