Ok -- i have been searching for a couple of hours but no luck -- i know someone can give me the answer in a couple of minutes. i have a rs 232 to 485 converter -- i am going to a REN ss24, the converter has 3 pins to hook the cat 5 to -- what wires should go to it?

What are the pins on your RS485 adapter.

I will have to check, but if memory serves it is a Data +, Data - and ground

For RS485, the cat5 pins 1-2 are ground, pin 4 is 485- and pin5 is 485+. That would probably mean the following:

Orange-white and Orange wire: ground
Solid blue wire: 485-
Blue-white wire: 485+
