View Full Version : Why are the Holdman sequences so popular?

I have been around the Blinky Blinky stuff for a few years now and yes, I use a lot of Holdman's sequences in my display. I find it very interesting that his sequences are used by so many others and I would like to know why.

I have my reasons for using his sequences, but I don't want to say why just yet, because I want to hear what others have to say first.

My hope is that we can learn a little more about sequencing from a discussion like this.

I like them because if the way that he uses color changes and the smoothness of the transitions. His timing to the music is also very good.

This is my opinion but his timing is right on, great color changes and some cool effects, but most of all his willingness to share. Music + the sequence. Can beat it.

I don't use his sequences, but I would have to guess that several people take longer to build their equipment and they run out of time to sequence their own music. When there is someone out there willing to share their sequence/music and you don't have any time left, you have an instant show.

I've seen but never used one of them. But on analysis, they're tasteful and not "in-your-face" as a lot of them are. He's taken great care to match display elements and music, and when they're seamlessly well done like that, the result is just very pleasing to watch. In short, he's working the subliminal sense of the effects instead of using obvious, in-your-face antics.

As stated before, the smoothness of the color transitions/changes is outstanding!

Thank you for the comments. I learned a few things like smoothness and tasteful. When building a sequence, it is so easy for me to get hung up on what I like, but after reading your comments it made me realize I need to be more considerate of what others will see. I need to consider the big picture and think about how will it make my guests feel.

With respect to the Holdman sequences, I was drawn in because the quality of his videos were really good and fun to watch. I too was in a rush my first year and didn't have any sequences of my own. Plus I had nine bushes in the front of my house just like the nine trees he had. Converting his sequences to match my lights was a piece of cake.

Obviously, Holdman is very talented but what I wonder is can the average person make sequences as good as his? Or does it really take someone with a better than average artistic ability to make good sequences?

I am very technical and haven't really applied myself when it comes to art. So, I have been thinking about recruiting some of my friends, that I consider to be artistic, to help me with my sequences.
