I had a GFCI blow up yesterday. I have a hottub at our house that is supplied by a 20 amp circut with a GFCI to plug the tub into. Well I normally don't have to deal with the tub occuping the circut so I can use all 20 amps for my lights. So I went out and got a clamp-on ammeter and the parts to build a short (2ft, 12awg stranded) adapter to seperate the hot from the neutral and ground. I decided to test my lights off of that circut and it worked perfectly. I then decided to test the hottub. So I turn the hottub off and then unplug it, then I plug my adapter in and the tub into the adapter. I go back and turn on the tub and pow (more of a click than a pow) all the power goes out on the GFCI, so I reset it, nothing, switch the breaker off then back on, still nothing. Anybody got any ideas as to what could have happened? :?
Do you think you killed the GFI? Have you tried going back to the original configuration to see if the GFI still works?
Is it 220 or 110VAC?
Shoot a digital picture of the box and connections if you can.

I'll try and get a picture when I get home but as for the other stuff, it is a 120VAC and yes I did go back to the original configuration as well as testing with my multimeter for voltage at the GFI recepticle. When I get home I will also probally take out the GFI and check for voltage on the line before the GFI. As for the wireing the whole house is wired weird, eg. I have a waterheater style timer that I have no idea what it connects to (not the water heater), there is a 20 amp outlet in the garage addition but no 20 amp breaker feeding the garage, and the wiring for the tub goes all over the place. Thanks for the help though.

I feel dumb. :? I went home and figured out that I just hit the wrong button on the GFCI. :x

Don't feel bad, it happens to all of us!
