View Full Version : NUD4001 CC LED Driver Group Buy Interest

DavidHenry
06-28-2010, 09:12 PM
The first pass is to get an idea of the interest in the NUD4001 SOIC constant current LED driver (used in the new single LED strobes with the PCB's)

Current pricing from Mouser:
1: $1.01
25: $0.89
100: $0.702
500: $0.648
1,000: $0.513
2,000: $0.364
Reel of 2500
2,500: $0.364
5,000: $0.351
10,000: $0.34

I thin most of us are in the 100 range, so a group buy of 2000 or so drops the cost nearly in half (excluding shipping PayPal, etc). Given the size and weight of these, I wouldn't think there would be much in postage.

The rub is that Mouser has these on order and shows a delivery date of 8/31/2010. We may need to find another supplier with parts in stock. Digikey shows to have over 10K of these in stock. At 2500 they are 37 cents ea.
You can easily find other suppliers of this part and their inventory levels by going to on semi's web site and going to the detail page for NUD4001 and clicking the 'inventory' link.
i.e.
http://www.onsemi.com/PowerSolutions/product.do?id=NUD4001

Of course, the oddest thing of all is that On Semi shows they will sell these DIRECT for only 27 cents in 2500 piece reels, but if you put that quantity in your cart, they are actually 50 cents each. Too bad.

How about an SMD resistor group buy as well? This will be much simpler since it's a fixed current limit value not associated with a particular LED color/type, etc. Perhaps a 100mA and 300mA value? We'll need LEDs for this as well. Let me ask around and maybe we can get something going - I'll start another thread for interest...

Easier to deal with then normal ones as they come in the rolls, basically you count by measuring the length for say 100 count once, then just cut to length.

so simple

I'm not sure what you'd save this way.

Based on the way the boards come in sheets, I figured I'd at least limit to multiples of 10.

Are we talking about the resistors for the LED Driver? I was planning on the cut to length method for the LED drivers. I did look at the resistors, and I think the total for a quantity of 215 was a bit over $2. Between that, and all of the possible values I figured it was a lot of time investment for very little savings, but if it turns out that the resistors are tape and reel, and there is interested I'll entertain adding them in to the group buy. If nothing else, it would save everyone on the shipping charges for a separate order.

ON Semiconductor has the chip for $.27 in quantities of 2500...
Looks like quite a bit less expensive than Mouser...

Just a heads up for members here
All

I have one resistor value to be fine tuned under practical testing and then the Circuit and BOM can be published, sorry for the delay.

Due to the effective low weight of resistors and transistor/PIC I will be ordering the following components that can be bundled with the PCB. It is likely cheaper to buy these for all your PCB's even if not used immediately but partial orders will be fine.

Parts:
1 x 2 Ohm resistor for a 1W LED
1 x 7 Ohm resistor for a 1/2W LED
2 x Resistors for option 2/3 build
1 x 2n2222 Transistor for option 2/3 build
These parts will cost 10c per pcb (at 5000 units)

If there is demand i would also consider the PIC

In the next 24 hours i will start another Bulk Buy for the additional components other than the NUD4001.

Cheers

Just so everyone is aware - this is an "Interest" thread, not a definite group buy.

And Aussie Phil is considering a group buy that includes the driver chip and resistors, perhaps even the LEDs, and possibly a PIC that would allow the device to do the strobe itself.

All the parts are SMD, so be aware you'll be doing some tiny soldering or having to use a reflow oven or griddle.

Good point Mark - we're already well beyond the initial price points anyway (> 5000) so a few more here and there won't really change the price (another penny at most!). I'm not sure there's any point in continuing with this interest thread now because of that - it's clear there is more than enough interest!

Just for everyones information...

I have posted the parts group buy over at ACL
http://forums.auschristmaslighting.com/index.php/topic,206.new.html

The Bulk Buy board is in a members only area so apologies to all who are not members, please understand that this is not an attempt to force you to join as i am sure the one of the cross site members will run a complementary buy here. There is more than enough demand that dual buys will not hurt any discounts.

Looks like Phil's group buy has different options for parts. The LED driver mentioned here is one of those options. Import duties to/from Australia add overhead to buying them domestically. So I would be for someone doing a full group buy for these LED driver chips and possibly the PICs in the US.

Fully supported, i would even be happy to add my total NUD4001 requirement to this buy and just have one bulk shipment for the Aussie crowd.

If that would be OK?

Seeing how everyone getting these is likely in the co-op for PCB's, that sounds like a great idea. I know this is only an interest thread, so I'll state that I'm in for 100 (unless the price increases from the 35-36 cents it's at now).

Made a list of the good and bad about me personally running the group buy.

Pro
1. I can contribute something to the community.
2. I save more money.

Con
1. Everyone else saves less money.
2. I'd need to keep track of a bunch of stuff.
3. Counting parts, do I really want to count parts?
4. Packing up parts.
5. Trips to post office to ship parts.
6. Explaining to wife why I need to do #2-5 when I've got so may other things on the to-do list.

I'm guessing I don't need to take a survey of the other 42 potential participants to come to the conclusion that it makes the most sense if I don't run the group buy.

I did update the recent totals on post #2 in the thread, so it should serve as a good starting point for the actual buy.

Hi all

Hopefully people are still checking in.

Mouser appear not to have stock until end of August, this may actually work out ok but does cut it fine.

I haven't looked into other sources in the US at this time.

I have a confirmed quote for any quantity from one of my suppliers at US0.45c and i'm hoping to talk 2c off that price so i can hold the 43c i quoted in my parts Bulk Buy.

If i better deal can be done, let's do it.

Has anyone looked into ordering these from DigiKey? If I'm understanding this correctly, if we order in multiples of 2,500 (greater than 5,000) we can get the same price Mouser has (US $0.351 each). Perhaps whoever runs this group buy could say it's limited to the first 5,000 (or 7,500) ordered and paid for. They have over 100,000 in stock now

That, to my knowledge, is the same thing. That page is actually how I found out digikey has lots of them in stock. If you click "check stock", you'll see the inventory status of their distributors. I'm not sure anyone would be able to buy from the MFG direct on this.
