I finally got around to opening up the PICkit2 and other goodies I bought from Kelly and everything's going good (following along with WayneJ's videos) until I have to select the programer in MPLab - there's a PICKit3 but no PICKit2 which seems odd, why have the newer version but not the older version? Is there a driver file or something else I need to import into MPLab before it's happy with the PICKit2?
Thanks in advance!

Have you installed the operating system on the PicKit2 yet? If not, that may be the issue.
This .pdf will show you how.

I provided those PICKit2's so I should be able to help. It has been a long time since I installed one on an empty machine. I don't recall anything having to be done to get them to work. The package included the Microchip disk. I'll have to look, but is there a setup program on there? when/how did you install mplab? The PICKit2 is listed on mine under both debugger and programmer. Warning - They are not in logical/numeric order. It is well down below the PICKit 3.

I have version 8.50 and a pickit 3 but the pickit 2 is listed in the programmers. It is number 7 in my version of MPlab

I downloaded 8.50 and installed that instead based on mmulvenna's comments and paid a little closer attention during the installation this time and if you do a custom install, which I am since I want it on the E drive instead of the C drive, then you must specifically check each programmer you want MPLab to be aware of/install drivers for. I checked the PICKit2 this time (the 3 was checked by default which is why I saw it as a valid option in my earlier install) and it's showing as an available programmer to my now. I'll try programming PIC's with it tomorrow. Too tired to try now.
Fair warning for anyone else doing a custom MPLab install.
Thanks guys for the quick replies,

Confirmed - the 8.50 version I installed last night (and included the PICKit2 "driver" for during custom install) works like a champ. All this on a MacBook Pro running Windows in VMWare Fusion. Vixen runs nicely this way too for what it's worth.
Thanks again all for the replies and help, much appreciated!
