Great tips. I am an amatuer/semi-pro photographer and agree with all the suggestions reported.

Shooting at dusk or dawn really makes in difference in exposure and will make light strings appear more natural.

Funny, he is from the paper that I get at home. I remember seeing one of those in the lighting contest that was in the paper. If you have a house lit up like mine, there is no need for ambient light, my lights are so bright when all on that I shoot at 3.5f for around one sec. But I guess we don't have normal light displays.
