THIS BUY IS CLOSED. Totals have been posted.
First things first:
Group Buy Rules (http://doityourselfchristmas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2919): read before posting in this thread.
By participating in this Group Buy all participants agree to release www.doityourselfchristmas.com, its Owners, Administrators, Moderators or any other staff of any and all liability and waive all rights I may have under all laws and governing bodies. By posting in this thread you agree you are entering a binding contract between the Organizer and the Participant.
This is a group buy for the Ren48LSD Parts only. What is a Ren48LSD? It is a 48-channel controller specifically designed to drive Frank's LED SuperStrips (LSD stands for LED Strip Driver btw...). It can drive up to 12 fully populated strips with all 4 channels (RGB+W) at full power using discrete transistors. It was discussed in this thread (http://doityourselfchristmas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11014).
The BOM for this is listed in the Ren48LSD PCB group buy thread.
BOM pricing is based on group participation.
All costs are estimated, based on current pricing.
Qty 50 cost is $27/kit.
Qty 30 cost is $28.50/kit.
Qty 1 cost is $52/kit.
Paypal fees, shipping and insurance have been added for all domestic (US) shipments.
International shipping fees will be calculated once the parts come in and are packaged, and will be requested at that time.
This group buy is open until 5/21/2010 8 PM Eastern, unless otherwise indicated by the Organizer. I will not be sending out PMs - check here for the total. I will send out a PM in a few days to remind you, if necessary.
Flat rate Priority Mail boxes will be used to ship the kits. I expect that up to 2 kits should fit into Small size box, and up to 10 should fit into the Medium size.

The title of the thread and some references accidentally said Ren24. This is a group buy for the Ren48LSD parts only.
Totals have been posted with shipping costs. Prices did not change from the original qty 50.
PayPal id is the same as my username @triad.rr.com. Please include your DIYC username so I can track the orders. PMs will not be sent to each person.
Canada shipping is guestimated. Fees for International shipping will be calculated and requested later.

re: 30 kits
There's only about $1 difference (per kit) between 20 and 30 kits. Of course, PP and shipping is extra.
Without the latest 2, we're already at 21 kits.

For you, Matt, I might make an exception. :)
The issue, of course, is what firmware do you want on your chips. There's the standard Renard firmware, the diagnostic FW and the DMX FW. For the DMX variant, you need to also specify the starting DMX address for the first PIC.
So, I wasn't planning to pre-program the PICs, but may work something out...

I'm a NOOB to DIYC... so what ever will play nice on the same network as the REN24LV's RS-485 from LSP
My assumption would be standard Renard Fmw?

Same source yes - you will need to change to DC operation and flipped outputs (I "think" it's the same options used as the LV) - I'll provide information for that as well as provide the HEX files (DMX and Renard). As long as you're using '1' for the starting addres you won't need to compile your own code.
btw - please put me in for 2 kits worth please.

You probably won't have to - they are self-addressing so if you daisy-chain them they will automagically pick up the the next address (whether using Renard or DMX protocol). You should be able to leave every PIC in your setup with a starting address of '1' in most cases.

Group Buy ends tomorrow night. I don't plan to leave it open past the official close time. Order totals will be calculated based on the final quantity and totals posted shortly after close.
Payments are expected as quickly as possible. If all payments come in over the weekend, then an order for parts will be placed late Sunday or early Monday.
Payments are via PayPal. I'll post my PayPal ID with the totals.
Please indicate your DIYC username on your PayPal payment, and that the payment is for the Ren48LSD BOM Group Buy.
Since this is a new BOM, it's hard to estimate shipping. I will probably error on the high side, and issue refunds if more kits fit into a smaller package.
For foreign shipments, I'll be waiting to charge shipping fees until after the parts are received and packaged up. However, you will be required to pay for the parts order amount immediately.

05-25-2010, 05:58 PM
There's an outside chance I will have a few extra kits. In several cases, the components were cheaper if I pushed the quantity up to the next price break, and so might have enough of mostly everything to build a few kits.
I'm also looking at several options for some of the components - items that are out of stock or only partially available at Mouser, or may be cheaper to get somewhere else.
Won't know about any extras until after the orders have been placed, which won't happen until I get payment from the current participants.

However, sorting will take a little time and won't start till at least late next week. Work schedule is busy next week with some travel, which will slow things down. Also have another group buy of LEDs to finish first.

Just an update. Due to life and other things, sorting hasn't even begun. I am hoping to get started this weekend, but no promises.
As some may have seen my note a few months ago, I recently had a heart issue. I've been doing OK, but my cardiologist has scheduled a procedure for next Thursday to try and get my heart beating regularly and in sync. That will take me out for a few days.
But rest assured the parts will be on their way soon.

Minor update - all of the 3600 470 Ohm resistors have been sorted. Next on the list is the 3600 MPA transistors. The RJ45's are already done, so once the big qty items are done, it will all be downhill from there...

Yet another update - all the transistors have been sorted, as well as the terminal blocks. So major progress is being made. I expect that stuff should start shipping early next week!
Getting ready to do the IC sockets. So I should be able to determine sizes for boxes soon, and get PMs/emails out for international shipping costs...

06-30-2010, 08:45 AM
OK, we're down to the home stretch. The chips and sockets are being bagged after getting a great deal from a local foam supplier for the conductive foam to hold the chips.
Then the boxes need to be packed with all the items and they'll be going off to be shipped.
Thanks for your patience...

I would highly recommend Joshua 1 Systems ICSP adapters. It's the guy who has posted here in the Vendor area for the EtherConSys.
He has an excellent webpage (http://www.joshua1systems.com) and sells via an eBay store. A year or so ago, I bought the full "package" of the 14, 20, 28, and 40 pin adapters. I made a mistake and ordered the wrong thing - he responded quickly via email, refunded my payment and shipped out the correct item the next day.
The PICs for most of the Renards are 14 pin.

Multi-ZIF socket - connects direct to the PicKit2 (or 3) (http://www.sureelectronics.net/goods.php?id=22)
I purchased mine from here. The only drawback is that the plastic shield makes it hard to get at the ZIF handles. I have never regretted the purchase.

I have the exact same one, and I too took off the shield. The only problem I had with that board is that mine did not come with the connector cable that goes between the board and the PicKit2. Instead I have to kind of 'force' the programmer onto the pins on the top. As long as you are careful you don't wack the thing, it works well.
You can power through Pics like there is no tomorrow with it. It takes longer to remove the Pic from the controller than it does to slap it into the programmer, program, verify, and replace.

I made an extender using these (http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1804) and these (http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1905) - you can get the smaller set of wires but I liked the colored ones so I could color code them. You can get single pin connectors also to make simple jumpers - very handy...
