View Full Version : RGB LEDs/Clear Covers Payment Thread from Group Buys

Well i want to thank everyone that participated in the group buys. since most people bought both items i figured it was easiest to do it this way. Below is a list of everyone that was in on the group buy and what they bought. i just totaled it all do make it easier on people when they pay. so i consolidated it all into 1 thread so it makes it easier on everyone.

Now shipping was added and it may seem high on some, but these caps take up alot of space. I did flat rate for some and ups for others. Before i ship i will figure out which way is the cheapest per person. If the price is cheaper than what you paid, i will refund the difference. If its more(which it shouldnt be) ill PM. If your outside the US i will qoute you shipping when it comes in. International gets hairy and im trying to make sure i get the best deal when it comes to shipping to you guys. So if you have a value next to your name and your international the price will go up.

So here is the payment info. My paypal is fathead45@hotmail.com.

3% has been added now. The red column is the final price. it was my fault for not changing it but i didnt have the sheet at home. There maybe some surplus for people which i will issue a refund after the group buy is done.

in the paypal info please put:

Username:
Qty of each item: Led's and covers
I will update this list as people are paying. As soon as everyone has paid the pieces will be on order. i already have the people on standby with the parts, so as soon as i pay them they will be on the way. They should take around 2 weeks to get to me and then a few days after that to get them out to you.

Thanks alot everyone, this turned out great. I hope to get a group buy for 5mm leds here in the next few months.

UPDATE: Only the name in yellow still need to pay.

UPDATE: 5/17/10

PIC 2 has what has been shipped.

Matthew,

I tried to send this with a PM, but your box is full.

I would prefer to pay the PayPal fees. Just doesn't seem right to me.

Let me know the total and I will send you the money.

take your total parts amount include shipping costs and multiply that number by 3%. Thake that answer and add it to your total parts amount w/shipping. here is an example:

total parts: $100
shipping: $4.95
total amount: $104.95
paypal fee: 3%
paypal total: $3.15
total amount to paypal to fathead: $108.10

I hope this helps.

Alec,
Your total on the sheet is $33.95. 3% is just multiplying that number by .03, which is $1.02. So you need to send $34.97.

To send with PayPal, go to paypal.com. You don't need an account to send money, so click on the "Send Money" button on that site.

When asked who you want to send the money to, put in fatheads email address, the amount ($34.97). You'll need to put in your credit/debit card number, etc...

Does that help you out?

i dont know why fathead never put the price included with paypal on it.

He explained that, but here it is again - he wanted to save everyone the 3%, by calling it a "gift", but people felt uneasy doing that. So, he decided after the fact, to include the 3% paypal fees. Actually, he loses a little bit, if I recall the paypal fees, at 2.9% + $.30.

Curious, don't they have percentages in Oz, or is it just an America thing?

Paypal still gets its 3% any way you pay.
Gift = you pay 3%
purchase = Fathead45 pays 3%

I think a bank-backed gift does not incur fees.
A credit-card-only gift incurs fees
Purchases incur fees no matter what

Since Paypal is being wonky about confirming my new bank account, credit-backed is my only option, so now that we're doing this as a straight purchase, I'll be sending paypal tonight. (I was trying to fix the PayPal confirmation wonkiness first...)

roger is right, i was trying to help save people money and i understand if they dont feel right by paying as a gift. so i took that option off. after i did that i did not change the sheet b/c i didnt have it. im sorry guys. this was my first group buy and it is going a lil bumpier than i thought.

as for the gift fee, there are no fees unless you use a credit card to pay. some people have about 20 bucks i paypal fees so i was trying to help.

i really hope if i do another group buy i can make it go smoother.

Since I am the one who expressed a concern about the "gift" thing, let me quickly explain why.

PayPal is a business, just like any other business. They offer us, and others, a service of transferring money from one to another for any purpose that is legal. They normally charge for this service and are quite up front about what they charge. They also offer free services for a gift, which I find quite admirable.

If I, or anyone else, objects to the charge then there are other options. Send a check, money order, Western Union, and wire transfer. For me, telling PayPal it is a gift, when it is obviously not, just didn't feel right. Sorry for causing the extra cost for many.

steve_hirst

compared to the savings on the parts, the paypal fees don't seem to matter all that much. plus I use paypal for buisness and would hate to be the subject of an investigation to save even a 20 spot(event though it was only about 3 bux)

just my 2 pennies

Hi, all...

Just got off the phone, with Matt - Fathead45. He's having some difficulty getting onto the DIYC site at home, and has for over a day. It's the only site he's having trouble with, but he's getting the PM notices via email, but even the links in the emails isn't letting him in!

He hopes to have it resolved, VERY soon (tonight?), but asked that I post here, so that anyone that hasn't heard back from him, knows what's going on. I feel certain he'll post here, when he gets it back in order, but also offered to PM for him, if he needs to desparately get a PM to someone. He's pretty confident he'll have it back up. It's a wierd problem, limited JUST to DIYC! Has both of us stumped a bit...

Anyway, that's what's happening...

If you think you're immune to attacks and spyware, etc...on a Mac or Linux, you're misinformed. There are quite a few vulnerabilities on Mac, especially with PDFs as well as the Safari browser. With Macs becoming more popular, and with lots of the scams/trojans coming via email or the Web, you are just as likely to get caught with something on a Mac as you are on a PC.

Linux is probably a little more secure, but again, when using a web browser, even something like Firefox or Opera, you can still be vulnerable.

Internet Explorer is a major target for exploits, but it's not the only one. At a recent "hackers" conference, someone broke into a Mac via an opening in Safari, and did it in less than a hour.

Put up a cutoff date, and anyone that doesn't pay by that date - their order goes away...

I know you plan to buy the whole lot of covers anyway, but those of us that did pay would like to be able to start playing with the stuff soon.

Then you would think that after nearly 7 years my G5 would have caught something since I don't have any anti-virus, any anti-spyware, or any anti-malware software installed. I don't even have a firewall and have surfed with impunity everywhere and anywhere and I don't have to view my in-box as a potential mine field! Its funny because every time this subject is brought up the first thing that's shot out there is the security through obscurity myth (http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2009/01/29/the-mac-malware-myth/). In 10+ years and with over 25 million users there are NO repeat NO viruses for the Mac vs. 10's if not 100's of thousands for Windows
If you don't like Apple then do yourself a favor and look into Linux. Life is to short to spend endless hours and energy trying to keep microsoft's spaghetti mess of an operating system running.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming...

I have to agree with mschell on one thing though give a cut off date because I want to play :p

Netgear by any chance? Sometimes their SPI firewall function (which you CANNOT completely disable) goes wonky and treats internally originating DNS requests as being a sign of "malware", blocking outgoing DNS requests through the unit's forwarder.

Fix is:
Short-term:
Disable all SPI firewalling functions
Change DNS of each machine to point directly to ISP DNS, not to the router's DNS forwarder
Long-term:
Ditch Netgear, or if it's one of the rare Netgear models supported by Tomato or DD-WRT, reflash with firmware that isn't poo.

The first line of the article is:
"Intego is reporting on a newly discovered variant of a Mac OS X malware first detected in 2004."
Its curious that a firm whose very existence is dependent on the existence of viruses and malware for Mac's would report this. I'm not saying they are fabricating a threat when none exists ;) but it does make one think.

I'm not saying that OS X is invulnerable to viruses and malware. What I am saying is why use an OS that is ridiculously easy to compromise when a better alternative is available?
To put it a different way would you rather live in a house which might... maybe... possibly... someday... catch fire or the house down the street that's already on fire?

P.S. I like you have paid but the list in the first post still shows that I'm unpaid. Matt, could you please post who has paid and who has not? If for some reason my payment did not make it to you I would like to know. I don't want to leave y'all hanging!

So - - now that everyone will be getting their little pile of LEDs soon - - what are your plans for them (if you don't mind sharing)? I'm thinking of making small strips (5-6" long x 1/2" wide) with them. Maybe 5 groups of 3 LEDs in series for each color to use 12v with at 100mA per color - maybe less if it's too bright... but possibly use both sides if I keep the whole thing SM. I'm not sure if I'll use the covers yet.

I like the idea of making custom strings (with the covers) too but not sure I want to wire them individually as fathead45 was doing (although it looks really nice...).

Primary project is going to be a megatree using Aussiephil/Fathead-style strands (7-series segments). Thinking two segments high by ??? around. I'm likely going to resurrect my I2C-addressable LED project with modifications - move from an ATTiny25 to an ATTiny48 and control 6 channels per chip, with transistors to allow controlling 24 volt series strands. There would be one module per two segments, likely with an I2C bus circling the tree halfway up it, and a DMX->I2C bridge in the central mast. Still need to do that DMX->I2C bridge, that's kind of on hold until RPM's DMX dongle groupbuy completes.

Also want to replace the lighting for this nifty "color cycling air bubble tank" decoration I have at home (not many LEDs for that)

I also have a bunch of 10mm RGB LEDs that I plan on adding covers to (which is why I ordered far more covers than 5050 LEDs.)

Well if I can get the firmware figured out (insert long string of expletives here!!!) each board will be able to control 16 rgb leds or in other words each board will have 48 channels of dimming. I'm going to be using 80 of these to control the 1600 leds with covers. 1024 leds will be for a mega tree (32 strands of 32 leds each on 4" spacing). 480 leds will be used for leaping arches (10 arches 1 board each with 3 leds per channel) . With 6 strands of 16 leds each left over for something else. At this point I need a Christmas miracle in May ;)

Interesting stuff folks - I'm looking forward to seeing some of this creativity! I'm interested in a higher density DMX LED controller - maybe 100mA or so outputs for the strips I might use - say like 96 channels worth on a single board...

I was thinking of using aussiephils "ribbon method" too..
In case anyone was thinking how to prep the wire..
this is what we use to do way-back-when you had to make db25/db50 cables.. by hand :-?...
* Cut a 25/50 way ribbon cable into 104mm lengths.
* With a sharp (boxopener?) knife and a straightedge, gently score the insulation 2mm from each end.
* Flip the 104mm length and repeat.

This should allow the 2mm insulation to be "peeled" off - leaving a 2mm exposed wire - at each end.

* Now tin the ends (either with a soldering iron - or as we use to do with a tinning bath (http://www.tpub.com/neets/book4/12i.htm))
* Strip the ribbon cable into 3 wire lengths - should end up with 16x100mm lengths with tinned ends!

I like aussiephils (I think it was) idea of blutak to hold the leds stable, upsidedown on your work space. (You could probably make a jig if your handy with wood and router.)
* Apply a smear of solderpaste on each pin of PLCC leads
* lay the pre-tinned ribbon cable over the pins
* briefly apply soldering iron heat
repeat until cross-eyed.

Here's a description of my process that has been refined fairly well after 4000 wire lengths have been prepped for the megatree process and over 2000 LED's now soldered :)

* Take a roll of ribbon cable, in my case 34 way as it was the cheapest per 3wire that i could buy, and using standard paper guillotine cut lengths required, I use about 1/4" - 6mm longer than needed.
* Next I marked additional black lines every 6 wires, so that when the cable is split down every 3 wires has a marker on it.
* Whilst watching TV split the 34 way into 1x3 (red marker) and 5x6wire groups.
* Now grab some autowire strippers and strip a short bit of insulation from each end of the wires above. The box-cutter method will slice wires and i would NOT recommend it. You don't need to be tidy at this point.
* Tin the wires, the heat of solder will cause some shrinkage of the insulation away from the end of the joint a lot of the time.
* Now grab some sidecutters and trim the tinned wires, check out my video for an example of how long.
* once you have a pile of these again, you can relax in front of the TV again and split the 6 wire sections into 3 wire sections

* now you get to the soldering part and it's easier to show than describe, i'll let you all watch the video

You might try xjypcb.com - see http://doityourselfchristmas.com/forums/showpost.php?p=115451&postcount=1 - their site shows a smattering of flexible PCBs...

I might be interested in something like this - I was playing with a small layout (8"x1/2") for a icicle-like widget to hold 6-9 of these LEDs but not sure... I was thinking of going with xjypcb for this if I did.
