I thought this was a pretty cool link and it's kinda related to what DIYC is all about, the video is set to the original Super Mario Theme.

Note: Those coils are NOT set to music. Those coils are MAKING the music!

By modulating the spark at audio frequencies, the spark is actually creating the sound you hear.

Thanks for throwing that out, my friends and I have been arguing over that. (I was right!). :) :) :)

These guys are about 40mins from my house. I plan to check them out next summer when they have their open house.

A guy I went to college with also plays with tesla coils:

Here is the video:

here is the main page:
http://silicon-arcana.com/tesla/

He writes:
" t's a Tesla coil. The "point" is just to make big sparks! :-)
Presently, it's producing about a million volts at around 150kHz.
Yes, the power supply is one of the pole transformers I got, wired up
as shown here: http://silicon-arcana.com/sday_secondary/supply.jpg
The system is controlled using a garbage can full of water as a big
resistor. You can see it on the left in the picture. The white PVC
pipe is raised and lowered to vary the resistance. Without it, my
house would go dark instantly :-) The ball is made from two stainless
steel mixing bowls welded together. I bought them from Ikea, hence
the name of the video file " ikea2.wmv". The video was of the first
test run with the new Ikea ball.

In the video, the coil tops out at about 1500 watts. My hope is to
get up to about 5kW by July, when the local chapter of DorkBot has a
Tesla show in Seattle and invites local HV experimenters to bring
their coils. To get to 5kW, I'll need to wind a new coil and rebuild
some other parts of the setup to be much beefier. Otherwise things
will catch on fire and/or explode :-) At 5kW, I project voltages will
approach 2MV, and arcs will be close to 6' in length, requiring me to
build a wire cage around it."

Scary thought: Imagine if this dude was your neighbor, and you were calmly having a family dinner, say 15 feet way from that monster....
Or you were out mowing the lawn, on the other side of the wall, or, you know, just going about your business! That thing would worry me! I think I would install a sprinkler system in my house :)
