Hello

Please add me to you list for 1 kit.

Thanks

In reading your original post it appears that you are referencing the Renard24 and not the Ren24 LV. There is a coop buy for both boards but this thread is the coop for the parts fro the LV (Low voltage).

In either case remember you will also need to get the enclosure(s) and in the case of the LV a power supply.

Good luck and welcome to the crazy world of DIY Blinky-Flashy:)

I think you had better clarify that statement. I don't believe the LV requires a power supply, as I have two of them plugged directly into the wall. So.. what was it you were trying to say??

Apparently I have been misinformed. I was told to get the larger enclosure so it would hold the DC power supply. I guess now I am the one that is confused.:confused:

I was told to get the larger enclosure so it would hold the DC power supply.

It depends on what you are using the ren24lv for. It comes with a power supply but if you are wanting to run portafloods or some other low voltage thing with it also, then you would skip the on board power supply and just use the external supply which you probably are using and it will sit next to your controller in the larger enclosure(if thats the way you want to do it)..

That is how I will be doing it.

I guess it comes down to "What will yosemite be using the controller for and is he looking at the correct ren24 for what he is needing"...

Hope I haven't confused things too much...

'nough 'bout this.. Let's get some more orders in y'all!

I am just starting the first year . This will be my first shot at blinky -flashy lights. I would like to start with a renard unit for the flexibility to add on as I grow. I 'm not sure exactly what I want - What is the difference between the renard ss and the lv. other than the obvious will it control mini-lights and some LED's .thats what I have to work with right now and will probably add on as I go. Any recommendations would be appriciated

We can't tell where you live. Are you in the U.S.? Down Under? That would help in determining which controllers are available for you to use.

jonedwste
02-18-2010, 12:29 PM
The renard SS will controll the strings of lights(both mini and LED). Typically the LV is used for controlling specialty items such as the might minis, portafloods, superstrips, etc...

If you want to just control strings of lights, I would go with the Renard 8, 16 or 24 SS. You could also do a Renard 24 or Renard 64. I have only built the Ren24SS and it was simple, cannot speak for the others.

There will be a group buy for the SS's coming up starting the 1st of March probably..

EDIT: Sorry for the double post..... Old age you know....

You would only need the external power supply like the one from here

http://www.circuitspecialists.com/prod.itml/icOid/9590

or

http://www.mpja.com/prodinfo.asp?number=16854+PS

if you are planning to run something other the then the external SSRs either AC or DC. One example if you wanted to pwr mighty minis from the REN24 LV.

I hope this clarifies and does not confuse anyone any more then I have been.

Sorry for the confusion. I'm from the middle of the mitten (michigan) I did some reasearch on the renard cards in the wiki after I realized there were more the one kind . Right now I'd like to keep it pretty simple so I think the renard ss24 boards are going to suit the need for now . I'm sure I'll be adding on so its good to know what to use each board for. Everyones help is greatly appriciated as I know I'll be asking a lot of questions once this gets rolling. By the the yosemite comes from my favorite cartoon chracter (Yosemite Sam) and yes my name is Sam

I'll keep an eye out for the coop for the ss24

I'm using my LV's to control individual high power LEDs, so I don't need some of the parts, but when I priced it out on Mouser with just the parts I need, it is only $2 less then this group buy, so I might as well get all the parts just in case I change my mind on how I'm using my LVs.

Ok Guys only 7 more days of this coop and I will place my order to my suppliers. If you are in the coop already please verify your qty. I have everyone posted on the first post in bold. If you want to increase or decrease let me know either via pm or posting here. At the close of the coop time on Friday I will make the orders and by Monday I should have full costs to be able to post final prices. As we are 20+ over the original posted price we are cheaper then originally expected and I will PM everyone with the costs.

It will take me a little while to sort parts but if you want a live web feed to the parts sorting I can supply that to you in a PM.

Thanks to everyone who is in the coop and everyone who wants to join yet.

http://christmasinshirley.com/wiki/index.php?title=24_Channel_Renard_without

It is quite different from the SS24 in that it doesn't have on board SSRs, it is designed to use external SSRs (SSRez, SSRoz, DCSSR, etc.) or to control small DC loads directly. Frank is using some to control his Mighty Mini Flood lights directly, without SSRs.

It will however talk to all of the other Renards, so you can place one of these in line with an SS24, etc, and they will all function together.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for all your work and time.

I'm in no hurry for my parts, if you want to wait until the oscillators come in and then ship the whole order that would be fine with me.

Also just let me know what the total will be and I'll get you paid now, so your not on the hook for the bill.

Thanks

Looks like most people have payed. I am only going by the Paypal receipts and not by the forum.

I say this as I have shipped one group. The first group was everyone who ordered 1 kit and the person who ordered 10 kits plus the 2 people who ordered 3 kits. So if you have ordered 1 3 or 10 kits from me and not received let me know. If you do not fall in to this group i.e. 2 4 5 6 or 7 kits you will ship tomorrow.

As soon as you print the postage label with paypal the tracking number is generated.

I suspect if you entered a later shipping date (eg print label today with a ship date of next week), the email will not be sent until the ship date you entered when printing the label.

I checked my e-mail this AM and had 2 bounced e-mails one for fathead and someone another member so I am betting the e-mails all went out this AM.

I did enter a ship date of today 3/31/2010.

Thinking DIY Guy and RichF may be right - I got an e-mail at 2:17AM saying it had shipped, with the shipping date today (3/31).

Hurry up, mailman! Oh - and boards so I can do something other than look at the parts.

Got an email as well this morning, so the supposition that PayPal waits till the actual ship date is correct.

Hopefully, since Rich is so close to me, it won't take but a day or so to make it to NC.

However, I'm in worse shape than most, in that I didn't order any of the Ren24LV boards from Frank in the last big buy, so until he gets this order shipped, I can't even place my order to get the boards. But I'lll have plenty to do anyway, as there are some SuperStrips and Mighty Mini PCBs already ordered.

Hi Rich, thanks again for the parts kits.

Could you tell me where I can find a schmatic for the Renard 24LV ver 2.0 boards? I've looked through all the posts and they all refer to a out of date Renard 64 schmatic version 1.0.

Or could you tell me what parts I don't need to install and how to set the jumpers to use the boards for the Mighty Mini RGB+W LED flood lights?

I understand about adding the 10watt resitor to keep the 5volt regulator cool and adding the 24v external power supply, but I'm lost with out a schmatic.

Thanks for your help....

I am not sure which parts you can leave out. There is a post documenting it started by frank and is it titled ren24lv

There is not a released schematic for the ren24lv but there is one that was posted one time for the ren24 3.0 board.

Hi Rich,

When I got the parts you shipped I verified the shipping list to the parts received and all the parts are there according to the shipping list.

I have received the boards from Frank and just completed putting the parts in order the way I intend to build the board. I found a discrepancy that I need clarification on.

Part 1-390261-1 (6 pin dip socket) shipped 5 pieces( 1 for each of my 5 boards). The board however needs 2 of these for each board. One for the H11AA1 chip and one for the DB102 chip (need to remove the middle 2 legs on this socket).

I know I could solder one of the chips directly, but that is not really the best solution.

Can you please clarify for me?

Thanks again for all your hard work on the group buy.

UHmm.. DB102 gets soldered straight to the board. I don't believe you need to socket this part.

(Pretty sure I didn't when I put mine together)

It is the same as the ren24 not sure why you would socket one and not the other? I thought it was recommended to socket all chips and not solder them directly.

The instructions on the ren24 say to use a six pin and remove the 2 middle pins. Frank does not have instructions for the ren24LV and he says to follow the ren24 instructions.

Since Franks site is not up I cant check the BOM to see what he suggested.

I think I have some extras around somewhere. If I can find them I can use those.

I apologize for the novice questions, but there is a lot of difference of opinion building the boards. i.e. does it need the 10watt resitor to keep the 5volt regulator cool added to the board that is not included in any instructions nor on any BOM (at least that I can see)?

It would be great if someone could put together a definitive set of build instructions.

Again, please excuse the ranting of an old man.

I agree, Mike. Not that you're an old man ranting (); but yes on the confusion. I have read over all the information, too, and I find it a bit confusing, too. There are many more options with Frank's boards than most of the others and the combinations and permutations of having options creates a bit of a problem for those writing documentation. Well, not a problem, really, but just more documentation.

It's the "more documentation" that's missing.

Arghhhhh....

I got my board today and started assembling.
In the parts kit, I see Qty: 7 of the 3-pin header (9-146281-0), while I count 9 places for a 3-pin header on the board. Are two of them not needed to be installed on the board? Maybe I missed a post about this already....but haven't seen one.
The board I received from Frank has 2 jumpers labeled "Power Tie**"
I plan on using the board to run 7 LED PortaFloods. Are some of the jumpers not used? Or, do I need to rustle up a couple more 3-pin headers and install them?

Also: I think this "Power Tie" is for an external DC Power supply? Do I need to get an external power supply for this single board to drive 7 of Matt's LED PortaFloods? Or should I build it differently for this usage - maybe some parts are not needed, or some extra are?

dirknerkle

I think the power tie is for internal vs. external power. The left two source power from the onboard power circuit to the RJ45s; the right two source it from an external source, which (I think) is provided at the far left side of the board.

Also know that I'm perhaps not the *best* source of info on the LV -- I built two of them last weekend and so far haven't seen any magic smoke, but in reviewing the tracings, at least that's what it *looks* like the power tie does and in fact, I had to connect them to make the onboard power flow to the RJ45 jacks...

I built most of one of mine last night as well, and noticed the same thing - only 7 3-pin headers came in the kit, but there are at least 9 spots.

Here's where how you choose to power it comes in to play.

Since I knew I was going to use an external 24V PS for mine, I left off the transformer. So I didn't put any headers in the JP1 and JP2 positions, where you select if you're using 120V or 240V. If you were using the on-board transformer, then you'll need those two headers.

Based on my tracing of the board, you will always need the 2 power tie jumpers (JP7 and JP8). These jumpers determine how voltage is supplied to the outputs or to the regulator for the control circuits.

If you put the jumpers on the 5V side, then 5V from the regulator/AC input will be sent to the outputs. No external DC input required.

If you put the Tie jumpers on the 9+V side, then whatever voltage that comes from the DC input will be sent to the regulator. That's why it's important to have the jumpers set correctly before applying DC power to the board.

As the person who made the mistake of putting the power tie jumpers on the 5v side when using an external power supply and getting more magic smoke then one would ever want.... be sure to set the power tie jumpers correctly.

As mschell said above 5v if you are using the AC on board input and 9 volt if you are using the external power supply as pictured in the first post of this thread.

EDIT: also make sure to add the additional resistor if you are using the external power supply. This would be hooked up again as pictured in the first post of this thread.

Am I right in that the board won't be able to power 7 LED PortaFloods? How about just one to test it out? I'm not sure if the per-channel current will be too high, or if the total current is more of a problem (or both) - and I'm not sure what the LED PortaFloods draw.

So far, I built the 24LV as a standard build, with everything installed. I thought I'd try do get the DMX firmware and see if I can fire it up with Freestyler and RPMs DMX Dongle.

I'm also not sure about the correct jumper position for the 'zero cross'. Maybe I'll find it on the wiki....

As some one sent me a PM on the count of the 3 pin headers I figured I would address as to why each member only recieved 7 instead of 9.

If you look at the BOM that was posted for the board in the WIKI it only listed 4 3 pin headers are needed.

571-9-146281-0 1 '''.100 three pin header(4 needed) Part specified is a 40 pin, cut off size that is needed.'''
571-3828118 8 '''.100 Shunt (4 needed) You may also "steal" these off of old computer parts.'''

From Franks board coop
1 571-9-146281-0 "AMPMODU Breakaway Headers 40 P HEADER GOLD"
7 571-2-382811-1 "AMPMODU MOD. IV Connectors ECONOMY SHUNT"

I counted the actual positions for a standard build and 7 were needed. If you put a header pin at all the places required.

The wiki can be updated to indicate 9 if it is necessary.

I think it should be updated to 6 as there are 4 for the SSrs and 2 for the power tie.

The use of the Zero crossing output in my opionion is not needed as most all boards now days will have ZC generated on board and most people will not use the ZC jumper. The voltage select is also another area I do not think requires a header pin as when we build the boards we build to 120v or 240v and do not change them. For this area I use a cut lead from the 1n4001 diode to create the voltage select.
