This group buy is now CLOSED! Thank you to everyone for paying rapidly. Everyone got their payment in before the deadline, so all LEDs will be ordered!
I will be placing an order for over 10,000 LEDs! Because of the size of the order it will take a little longer to arrive at everyone's door step. The seller has agreed to prepackage all LEDs in groups of 60 so my turnaround time will be very fast. The seller states it will take 11-12 days for me to receive them. I will have all orders shipped within 36 hour of receiving the LEDs. Most participants should have their LEDs delivered around March 20th.

OK, the LEDs have been ordered (For a few days already) and should be shipping to me within 3 days. I'm going to start getting labels and boxes ready so they're good to go when the LEDs get here.
I will also be working on getting the refunds out to everyone this weekend. The refund will be $0.50 per set of White LEDs and $0.75 per set of Warm White LEDs.

That "little voice" in the back of my head says that waiting until everything is ready to ship/has been paid for would be prudent. What if you need more labels, tape, boxes etc.
I'm in no rush here.. so waiting until you are sure you have all costs covered is fine by me.

My little voice says that Paypal will probably benefit more from that refund than I would.
I'd propose that if the refund is going to be under a couple bucks, that it be donated to keep the message boards running.

Did you by chance end up with any extras? I realized sometime today, that I was going to ditch the C7's and use a high powered warm LED in each of my pumpkin's for Halloween this year. I'd like to pick up another set (I'd probably live with a partial set) of Warm White.

It doesn't costs anything for the receiver of the money to send it back to your PayPal account as a refund. And he'll get a refund of some of his PayPal fees when he does that.
I would certainly favor giving it back to the buyers, and letting each decide if he/she wants to give it to DIYC, or some other worthwhile cause.

I would suggest the refunds go back to everyone as planned - - do I need/want the refund - NO - do I want to make more work for Todd - NO - do I work for PayPal - NO - but it keeps the entire transaction clean and unquestionable.

I agree with the two previous posters.
I am not going to dictate nor influence where everyone's refund is going to go. I started the group buy under the pretense that the excess would be returned to the group and that is what I intend to do.
As everyone knows, group buys take a lot of work. I really don't want to create another spreadsheet to track who wants their refund to go where. If you wish your refund to go to DIYC that's great. When you get your refund send it to DIYC.
Due to home projects taking longer to complete then planned (When don't they?!?!) the refunds will be issued tomorrow.
Thanks
Todd

Well - this I certainly agree with! While no one is expected to make money on coops, it certainly isn't right that they should lose any either. I'm in no hurry - please make sure all your costs are covered!

ATTENTION!!!
I installed a Cool White LED into one of my strips with a 100ohm resistor and found it was not working. I eventually found that THE LEDs DO NOT FOLLOW THE SILKSCREEN! If you look at the silk there is corner chopped off the normally square package to indicate the orientation (see attachment). I found that this is 180deg out - in other words you need to install the LEDs upside down from what is shown on the silk. Note that this was not the case for the RGB LEDs that were installed.
I've said this multiple times but cannot stress enough - when you build your strips do a single LED/resistor combo and test it before building up the entire strip. It's very hard to remove these LEDs - I had to cut off the leads and yank on them with pliers to get it out. When you're testing, just solder in the resistor and hold the LED by finger pressure to make sure it's right first.
If/When you other folks get your strips it would be to good to confirm that you are seeing the same thing. The only thing I can guess is that Frank was using different LEDs (both RGB and White) when he did his builds and they followed a different pinout for whatever reason.

Is your Picture Correctly installed or incorrectly installed?. Looks like the corner is the the correct place in the picture I see.
LabRat
03-30-2010, 09:53 AM
I believe those are the RGB's... the "white" leds are the non-populated spots.
*IF* these pinouts out out of whack, can this be resolved via a simple rotation? Or do we need to barnacle and/or cut traces?

Correct - sorry if that was not clear - the picture shows the empty White location and it works fine if you install the LED upside down to the silk pattern. I don't have a picture of one installed but it's pretty straightforward.
EDIT - added picture of flipped LED.

Ok so the white LEDs need to be with the notched corner rotated 180 degrees.

I was watching a video of how to waterproof the smart string pixels using the liquid Plastic product. It got my little mind thinking. Can anyone think of a reason why you couldn't use the same product to waterproof your Superstrips. Several coats of this plastic might remove the need for the Fluorecent Tubes.
Has anyone tried this crazy idea? Would there be an issue with the resistors getting too hot? IF this worked, surface mounting these strips on a soffit would be much easier and have a much smaller profile.

I like this idea! I was looking at the cost of plastic tube and it wasn't cheap and it would make the strips a lot more obvious. I would be running my strips on 5V so I wouldn't see there being any heat issues as the stuff can be heated up to +93ºc and the 5V versions seem to keep cool.
I would be interested in knowing if someone has done this and how it preformed before I start dipping.

It may work - but the tubes are nice in that the keep the strip clean and out of the elements. I think it's pretty easy to mount the tubes as well and it makes them much easier to "aim" than if you mounted them directly to the house.
I honestly didn't think the tubes (http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=141&) were all that pricey. They are $5.75/6 foot which gives you four tubes (w/o tax/shipping). I'm lucky in that I have four of the TapPlastic stores nearby but I don't think shipping was too bad...
Anyway - just make sure you think the whole thing through on mounting and the wiring involved if you go 'au naturale'...

bubude, the thing is you are lucky in that you have exposed rafters. I have boxed vinyl soffits. A tube hanging down will stick out like a sore thumb. I was thinking the flatter profile could be mounted to the metal lip holding the soffit. I also don't want to shoot myself in the proverbial foot. The Superstrips will be a significant investment (when boards are available again) and I don't want to mess them up.

Which tubes are they? (I assume 1" diameter based on the price you quote) and cut at what length? Also, do the end caps come from the same place? Is there anything else one would need to enclose/mount these strips?
Thanks!

I ordered some from TAP on Brian's advice, I got 1" od x 6' 1/16" wall (SKU 23299) and they cut it to 18" lengths. Shipping to NE cost $9.09.
