Frank over at http://www.ahwatukeeholidays.com has a pretty neat Ropelight Star.

One of the themes for 2010 at our house is stars on the roof.

I have taken Frank's design one step further and made a excel spreadsheet to calculate the dimensions for given rope light section lengths (Usually 18 or 36 inches) and the number of section you want to use.

For Non MS Office users - get over it! sorry I will up load an Open Office when I get home.

Try this and let me know if it works. I had a spreadsheet trying the same thing but was really wanting to know the height. This is the formula I came up with. It can probably be simplified but here it is. (Already modified for your spreadsheet.

=SQRT(((2*(D7+C7)*SIN(RADIANS(54)))^2) - (((D7+C7)/2)^2))

As stated below, Open Office version also loaded. It is funny how we can't upload OO files, i would have they were safer than MS office
