Well,

it's Jan 2010, we might as well start talking about Xmas 2010 as the last one is over.

We also need to start the conversation about a Mini Down Under. The inaugural Mini was held at my place in 2007, and Goldies' in 2008, 2009 was a skip year, but 2010 needs to be back on.

If you can get a weekend set down reletively soon, i would cross the ditch to met up with you vegemite lovers.

Count me in... I am gathering lights faster than ideas to do with them.
Now I need some ideas and help.

wjohn: I can't help with a location (and my house is about the size of half your garage).. but I know the Melb-chapter of "melbourne.wireless.org.au" use to hire a scouthall in Hawthorn (http://melbourne.wireless.org.au/events/venue). (I think they might have it covered under their subscriptions). Something like that might be an idea.. especially around june'sh.. just an idea..

This year I'll probably have to pass, which is a pity. 5/6 June is a great time, but just not for a 2000km trip once again, but I'll see what I can do.

Lol Cheater. I will offer next year to hold a Mini here once I get the shed extension done. I was hoping to get it done last year, but $ and time caused that to be delayed lol

I'd love a Sydney mini, but would also love a QLD one too. I know theres more Victorians that are active here, but us New South Welshmen are building in numbers too :)

IF, and thats a BIG IF I can get the week off from work (I work that weekend) my wife has given permission to go to the mini once again - I'll be going alone, so if anyone wants a lift from NSW, or melbourne airport, I'll see what I can do (VE SV6 sommodore, so not TOO rough of a ride lol).

Assuming I can go, I'll probably leave Thursday, drive to Albury, spend the night, drive to Melb on Friday. Stay Fri, Sat, Sunday & head back on the Monday - probably all the way back in 1 day.

Any suggestions of accomodation about $100 a night thats NOT the Formula 1 in Dandenong North would be appreciated lol

Dave

Edit: Oh if this happens, & you want a lift - No $ for the lift, you get your own accomodation (We can decide whats the best option together). I drive & pay for fuel (Novated lease), and have lost 0 points, 0 accidents since I gained my licence 25 years ago.

Matt_Edwards

OK, the ISLAND has spoken, 5/6 June. Location TBA.

Have marked in the diary - will ask all the powers that be if I can have some time off. Will crunch some numbers to see if I can afford it! Going to Sydney in 3 weeks to see Top Gear live and that's going to be a bit expensive - mind you the mini will be just swapping cars with lights . . . . either way it's still just a bunch of middle aged blokes prattling on . . . . *duck*. :p

PS - Dave - I was sooooooooo looking forward to staying in Dandy again!!

.

There are some places in the city that charge by the hour  aparently.... (just in case you are interested)

I stayed at the Downtowner on Lygon street (awesome for dinner!) for $99pn.. Motel Ringwood (nr. wjohn).. in fact "motel <anything>" will probably be around $99..
There are plenty of backpackers (Victoria Hall/CBD; StKilda;) that do rooms @ $30-80/night (ah yea... backpackers.. I remember when... sigh )Try wotif.com.au (can't select that far away yet)

I work in Dandenong so share your sentiments.. I've driven past that place a number of times wondering who would stay there.. a connundrum no longer :)

I'd suggest once we establish where.. then the sleep can be dealt with..
I am happy to lend you my swag or one of my many tents for the night if you have somewhere to pitch it.. (sorry it doesn't come with the blonde-chick-that-can-cook any longer.. I married her :)

Count me in!!! 2010 will be my first year for an automated display, so I am going to be a sponge!!

Happy to do any pick-ups from Airport if needed. I'm about 10-15mins from Wjohn (Ringwood area - Motel Ringwood is 1 click from here - maybe if we get some approx numbers, could do a group booking/disc - i'll ask if interested)

I'd offer my shed to play in, but its full of $&#@. Could try to empty it - eBay?? (its on my to-do list)

Be great to catch up and chat to people and see what they doing.

New items, general help, demo's of ideas as well as items we all dont have (Like pixels, floodlights, DC SSR's). Tips on speeding up your programming, some 1 on 1 help in things like programming pics, and a lot more

The one in 2008 was brilliant - I learnt heaps, and the impromptu one last year was a lot of fun as well.

Plus you get to meet many of the oddballs that hang out here ;)

slyfox04
01-27-2010, 05:35 AM

Cant fly or drive to Sydney?

Me & possibly 1 more will be heading down. No fuel costs on the way down or back, but the extra accomodation might be an issue I guess. Leaving here Thursday, possibly picking Matt up, head to about Albury thurs night, Drive to Melb Friday, & head back Monday morning and probably drive all the way to Sydney in 1 day (I'd normally go inland as I'm in Lithgow, but the difference is only 120km or so).

For Sydney siders who won't be able to make it down to Melbourne, there will also be a smaller local event. Dave and I had planned one in Lithgow, but not sure where it will be.
I will start a new thread about this shortly so stay tuned.

Yep. As soon as I get the shed extension done we are more than welcome to hold it there. Hopefully a little after the Melbourne one, so ideal for those in the Sydney area that cant go (I'll be bringing tips back from down south)

I'm only a little over an hr from Penrith, so not too far.

I am sure there will be heaps available in Melb, Dave has DMX dongles so will looking at converting to DMX, Aussiephil uses DMX. I use DMX exclusively and will be bringing kit to Melb. I can also bring some of RPM's Dongle PWB's to build more.

This sounds fun! Maybe, if people are going to be "talking" about certain subjects, they could be video taped.. then uploaded and links put up.. For others that can't make it.. or that live elsewhere on this planet?

Think it might be possible? (i dont mean anything high quality or anything.. just a handheld cheapo recorder would be fine..)

Where in Dandenong? I work there as well.
Just near Abbots Road (South Dandenong).
(A North/NW = the smell of fresh baked bread from the macca's bakery :D;
A south/SE = the tip  - we call it our "morning wakeup call")

BTW: Do we have a "home" for the mini yet?
I asked about using our (perfect) Training rooms at work but unfortunaly we are bound to v.strict Customs/Quarentien rules....
so no go.. sorry team lucked out. :(

Kitchener Road;Pound Road;Abbots Road... sheesh - all sounds like a lunchtime/breaky micro-mini in the making!

OK.. money where mouth is - I'm on "Nina Link" (right off National Drive (off Abbots Road - "Pellicano M2" estate ).
My office window has the tip on one side and containers in the others!

I'm still working on some other ideas for a "home" for the mini.. we have an office in camberwell thats unoccupied on weekends.. about 25% poss. right now.
Anyone else come up with ideas?

I've been attempting a design/build a laminar flow fountain that could have potential for the renard I'm (also) trying to build.. might be worth a brag if it works. ;) (or if I ever get either finished :D)

Haha. I DOES have LED footwell lighting, but no controller yet (Evil grin)

Dave: This will be my second official Blinky meeting, but 3rd trip down - John organised a great impromptu one last june when I went down to get the lights (which I never got, grrrr). You will learn heaps, meet some great people (as well as John and Kev too). Well worth the trip.

Matt: Once a venue is decided, let me know where your planning on staying. I may as well book a room at the same place, or at least close, so travelling is easier. The Formula 1 in Dandenong North is OFF the list!

John: Last time I went down to Goldies for the Mini it cost me 2 Triks-c's and a few hundred in parts for the only coop I have ever joined (Cant remember what it was now). It's always expensive, but a load of fun :)

I was down at Warrendyte last weekend, and I spotted a sign from the Bendigo Bank.

They have a meeting room, complete with projector and kitchen facilities etc available for nicks! (as long as you are a non-for-profit org).

I'll be down there again tomorrow morning, and I'll get the contact details etc and see if we can grab the room.

Free is good.

OK...
I have approval from my work (Wridgways) to use the Kitchen for the weekend. (photos of room attached)

Located at 26-40 Nina Link, South Dandenong (just off national Drive/Abbots road).

Large & Secure - big carpark, Toilets, BBQ, plasma screen, Power points, Internet, Vending machine, coffee/tea fac. etc

yes... it is Dandenong South... but no problems in using it (and no cost).

Can I attend, too?

I just Googled the directions from my house to Dandenong, and I think if I leave tomorrow, I think I can still make it:

Driving directions to Dandenong VIC, Australia 14,934 mi – about 55 days 11 hours

Part of the directions involve some extended kayaking across the Pacific, but it'd be a fun trip!

Location: about 40Km from CBD (http://www.whereis.com/?id=40D3CE083A58F3)
(lat/lon) 38o02'17.11"S 145o13'15.71"E

Visiting staff usually stay at Chifley in Doveton (http://www.chifleyhotels.com.au/component/hoteldetail/?tid=DOV) and the Ramada Dandenong (http://www.ramadaencore.com.au/) but be mindful that they would be here for work not play and would have a hire car (not sure if they are in the proposed budget - I'm advised both have a "good bar").
Other suburbs close by (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=nina+link,+south+dandenong,+vic&sll=-38.018886,145.1548&sspn=0.096288,0.219727&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Nina+Link,+Dandenong+South+Victoria+3975,+Au stralia&ll=-38.031327,145.228271&spn=0.192544,0.439453&t=h&z=11)include: Cranbourne, Hallam, NarreWarren etc.
Goes without saying - the further you travel from dandenong - the nicer the accom. (if you have a car try Knox, Frankston, Patterson Lakes, Mulgrave, Glenwaverly - even the CBD, Camberwell, or Mt Dandenong might be viable)
But considering "its just somewhere to lay your head for the night" (and I'd assume we are going somewhere nice for late dinner Sat night) might make the options a little more "paletable".

Any gear you might bring can be left in the office on Sat night - its very secure here.

A pub has just opened up locally in Lyndhurst.. (excellent steak sanga and all-you-can-eat)
I think they do accom too. I'll force myself to do a recce at/for lunch - just to check for you

Forgot to mention: We have showers as well (byo towels/tolietries etc)

Did I mention a gratuious plug for my work whos donating the premises?

daviddth
03-18-2010, 07:07 AM
Toll charges for me are not an issue - Roam e-tag works on Vic "free"ways as well :) For those that are down there without a car, if we can organise a common area to stay, I have 3 spare seats in the rear of the car to transport people between the mini and accomodation. I'm sure I wont be taking a lot of gear to the mini, Matt will only 1/2 fill tyhe boot, so there will be a bit of room of extras like laptops etc

Matt is travelling down with me on Friday (1 day trip - ergh!!!!) and there will be just the 2 of us travelling in the car while down there.

Its all good teamsters. I'm still in a job - this is all still on ;)
John's taking the lead on the mini... I'm just a lacky providing a place to have it.

For anyone who is interested in better than a-couple-of stars: Our (brand new) local pub (which has a outstanding steaksanga in the sportsbar) is http://www.lynbrookhotel.com.au. About 5 mins car drive up the road.
Accom Prices are listed at around $185 but recommend calling because I don't think people are busting down the door to stay there. It looks aimed for the interstate-work-traveller - so I doubt it would be busy on a weekend (not much to do out here).
They have an outstanding all-you-can-eat bistro too... might be an option for lunch(?). Their beer is very, very good (yes.. extensive personal experiance here).

I've listed a few other options in previous posts.

You need to remember: this is Dandenong South... its quintessential industrial estate... Think Villawood (NSW), Dudley Park (SA), Queanbeyan (ACT) or anywhere in NewZealand..
Asking for a "Foot spa" and "Massage" services out here might give you various outcomes.

daviddth
04-14-2010, 01:03 PM
OK since I picked such a good place to stay last time I came down for a Mini, I will NOT be picking the location this time. Matt, Ingrid, anyone else, pick a place, or short list of places that does NOT include a Formula 1 and I'm happy.

I wonder if Lynbrook hotel would so a deal on 3 or so rooms for 3 nights..... :D

Look.... just to be certain.. I took-another-for-the-team today, and forced myself to have another countr'y for lunch - just for you.
This time I took a mixed-gender crew. The only complaint was "the meals are too big". All meals seemed to be $14.50 in the sportsbar.

The beer is pretty good. ($5 crownlarger special)
To ensure they didn't trick me with an exceptionally good sample - I tried a few over a period of the hour - for scientific purposes only, of course.

I'll try again in a couple of weeks, just to make sure their service doesn't slip.. OK?
We can't have you lot getting bad data can we?!?!

Thinking out loud here, I was wondering, would anyone like to have a session on "intro to DIY smd".. I'd be happy to do a practical lesson in this, and you could 'build' some little widget.. There would be a small cost to cover materials ( about $5 each or less)..
All the techniques i'd use will use tools that a moderately equipped Dyer would already have ( ie a good soldering iron, and a pair of tweezers )..

I'm not sure which little widget would be useful, but i'm sure i can come up with something very simple and low cost. Perhaps a RGB LED Pixel. It would be a very simple wee board, with a single PIC chip ( a soic 16f688) , a couple of caps, 100nF three resistors and a RGB LED. (5050), and a wee power supply. ( lm7805 in SOT-23 ). Important to keep it little for cost, but also because we will be time limited, and won't have enough tools to go around everyone..

It would also be a great opportunity for our more experience crew to demonstrate PIC programming to those that don't..

I continously hear that SMD is too hard for DIYers, and I'd love you guys to see that its actually pretty easy.

Michael Sullivan

I too think is is a great Idea.

I am happy to bring rework Hot air station down for the demo.

I would suggest you don't go below 0805 size (don't want to scare them off!)

If is is simple soldering practice I have a spare role of 10K resistors in 1206 case.

I'm game for it. I think I mentioned it before . . . but I'll say it again :) My requests would be talking about DMX (I know it was talked about last time, but that was 2 years ago!) and choppin' up rope light.

And another thing, might be a good idea once an agenda is in place to list a bit of a "suggested to bring" list.

I'm starting to get excited, should be a larf!

We need to lock in dates so that our Northern cousins can book cheap flights and come share.

Dates

5/6 JUNE 2010 This is now locked in, Please start organizing travel to Melbourne

Location

Last two events were at members homes. This is an option, but I also thought what about hiring a local hall and levying ppl a small charge for the event.

DurationTwo days worked well, demos, practical sessions, Dinner

Ideas?

Feedback?

Travel - Have some pickups planned for the airport if a few people are flying in at the same time, save some taxi fairs.

Accom - can u offer a bed/couch to an out of towner to reduce their costs?

Halls/ Office space - anyone got any leads? I know my local council rents halls.

One of the topics we seem to talk about a lot is "Part Substitution"
Do we want to add this as a topic to be discussed at the mini?
I am happy to assist where appropriate and describe the process that is needed for basic part specification.
FETs are one example currently being discussed.

I am wondering if you folks would like to build something really useful for the SMD demo.. A USB-->DMX dongle? Then you actuall y have something really useful! The dongle is an Enttec Pro Clone, its set up for self powered or bus powered, so you'll be able to use it with vixen or lots of other bits and pieces.

Parts and PCB will be about A$25 each.

I was thinking about it, and since i already have the PCBs and enough parts for this it will save me a truck load of time, and instead of getting some dumb blinky flashy thing, you'll get something useful

Maybe i can start another thread and bring you up to speed on it a bit before the event so we can dive straight into the pratical bits..

$25 is a fair price, I'd be happy to pay that to have a go. Good idea to do something practical.

PS - seriously, we need a tshirt. they should all say NERD . . . . in el wire so it blinks. hehehehe

You know, once you start on SMD, you probably won't want to go back to those pesky components with long bits of wire attached to them.. You'll enjoy spending you money on other thigns ( smd is cheaper ), and you'll be able spend more time with your family ( smd construction is WAY faster ) and you'll be able to build things that you can't with Through hole ( theres Lots of thigns only available in SMD )..

Maybe the down-under crew might actually buck this trend of being scaredie cats of smd

Bom Costs in $A

FT245RL $4.05
ATMEGA88 $3.98
USB PLUG $0.90
NKE1205 $7.80
6 x 100nF Caos $0.18
2 x 16pF Caps $0.08
2 x 16Mhz Xtal $0.92
1 x 6N137 SMD8 $0.90
1 x MAX481 ( or equiv ) $0.70
1 x SMD LED $0.12

Thats $19.63...
You can choose to make a wired ouput tail or put your own ( expensive ) 5PIN XLR connector...

PCB's are $3 a go, and there was a probalby a bit of freight.. So, with some solder paste and stuff, i figure $25.00 is about right..

You can actually dispense with the NKE1205 part ( dc/dc converter ) but then you dont' have properly isolation between input and output, and i don't recommend it.

I'll bring my ATMEGA programmer so you can program your chips..

Because we are going to run out of time if we are not careful, i might run the boards through the pick and place and get them to place the FT245 and the Mega88 in the machines.. This will still give you the chance to place a soic chip, and a bunch of discretes, which is a good start.

6750They do only have small branches, which doesn't worry me that much. The delivery quote does look expensive but i don't think there is a great deal of chose. The advantage i am just starting out and i can order specific lengths that i require.
I probably put these pics in showing.
Attached is mini tree made from 6mm steel rod 75cm high, will require 5m-100 led string in seven differant colours.
For the top of my mega tree ( 6.5m high including star) the three dem star will be double wraped with 6 sets of lights 2.6m-52 led string. the tree will have 48 sets 10m-100 led string.
I will be looking at ordering about 140 sets of lights, but will split order in half to keep under $1000 to prevent import duties etc

I can bring down a panel of 10 RGB Kittys, and a couple of 16ch DC Serial SSR.
BUT this will only be a demo, not a try it yourself.
