View Full Version : SSRez Coop Interest

Okay folks, I have to know how many are actually interested in this. I suspect the interest will be much larger than the coops can be but until I need to know how many are interested so I can plan how to do this. Just reply and let me know how many you would be interested in. This would be for the PCB, the parts and an option for the enclosure just like last time.
The timeframe for this is would be orders in May for delivery in late June.
Thanks,
Chris

For anyone looking, here is the thread from the last coop that gives some idea of price

I've already got the blank boards from a previous buy with wjohn but assuming prices scale down for the group buy I'd be interested in a few more PCB's and parts for all the ones I have. Let's say:
4 x SSRez PCB's
30 x part sets (enough to make 30 SSRez's)
10-20 x enclosures
Thanks,

Hi Mike - Welcome to DIYC!
If you are looking for LOR replacements have you seen the Renard 8/16/24SS series of controllers? The Renard 16SS would be the same as a LOR 1602W in capacity. It's an all-in-one configuration (controller+SSRs). There is a coop going on now I believe...
The SSREz is for controllers with external SSRs like the Ren64, Helix, Grinch, FireGod, etc.

Ricky,
wjohn has the PCBs in stock. The pricing for the boards does not really change as he orders the boards in batches and then sells them off slowly. The benefit is you have a complete kit that allows you go to to a completed unit quickly.
Good Luck,

Just in case you guys do not know this, lbro actually does all the sorting, counting, packing and mailing for this coop. I travel ALOT for work and can never be sure of when I am going to be home. So I source parts, get quotes, take payments and order all the parts.
This actually helps as it splits the coop work between two of us and makes it less demanding. Of course, I AM STILL FULLY RESPONSIBLE so if anything happens, its my fault not his.
From the interest already, we will exceed the normal coop limits. Based on this I may have to take the coop off site. Please do not let the quantities you see here distract you. I want to make sure that everyone gets the stuff they need.
As to the June time frame....I actually do this on purpose. There are two "waves" of coop times. The first is now until late April. However, this is too early for the second wave that happens in September (all the last minute folks). I typically buy extra parts to handle the second wave. This is all money out of my pocket (and yes it ends up being several grand) so I want to sell these as quickly as possible.
I will try to get some idea of the pricing within the next couple of weeks. Rest assured, I can get these much less than anyone else because I buy in quantities that few can handle.
Cheers,
Chris

Very likely 8-16 complete sets (PCBs, parts, enclosures) with a desire for an additional 8 PCBs.
This is, of course, contingent on the commit date being after April. If the commit date is prior to April, the number will be far lower. (Sorry for the wishi-washiness, but there are currently things in motion beyond my control that could affect my life significantly in April. I'm fairly confident I'll be OK but I'm cutting way back on making financial commitments until then.)

Everyone, please go back and read the original post. This is almost certainly going to be an offsite coop. This means I have NO LIMITATIONS.
Why am I doing this? Well for one, the amount of parts on an SSR are small compared to other BOMs. You cannot get any real purchasing power based on 150 units...that is only 600 TRIACs. When you get beyond a 1000, that is when the cost becomes workable. If a bunch of folks decide to start running a bunch of 150 qty coops, I will pull the plug on this one. It does not make fiscal sense to run this at any quantity less than 300-500. I am not trying to be ugly but there is a huge amount of effort that goes into these things and I will not do that for only 5-10 participants.
Also, I may buy extra parts (especially if I can get to another price break) and offer the left overs for sale.
Cheers,
Chris
I see that the price was $12.94 a set (PCB, Parts, Enclosure) in the last coop with shipping at $15 for 9-16 sets. Can you tell me how much a set of parts and enclosure would be without a PCB please? I am considering buying my PCBs from WJohn with my Ren 64. I am sorry if this would make things complicated and I would understand if you didn't want to sell a set like this but I don't have much money to put towards this project right now so I have to plan out my costs before buying.

Chris,
I wasn't saying that at all. I didn't mean to imply that there should be multiple ones. I didn't catch where you said that you were running it off-site and if you are willing to deal with it, then that's great.

typically, you subtract $2 for each PCB. However, I have not started getting pricing together just yet. Given that there is significant interest, I will get moving on this next week.
I would do the same if I were you BTW. If you are already getting the other parts from wjohn it only makes sense to get them all at one time.

Hello everyone. I was wondering about this coop buy thing, I live in Australia, where sadly I have to admit that the whole automated xmas lights thingy hasnt really taken off yet, but my father-inlaw and I wish to fix that....Since I am a little far away to join in the coop, because shipping would be a lil ridiculous, I have found a PCB manufacturer near my work who is pretty reasonably priced. I was wondering if anyone had the actual proper design files that i might be able to get some boards made over here.........
cheers

I'm interested in 4-8 depending on price and due date. I saw the post for the Group Buy from rstehle, but D@mn a 6 hour window from 6pm to midnight is not much time to even read the past posts.

If I only want 1 Ren 64 would it be cost effective to get in on a coop knowing that I'd have to essentially pay for shipping the parts twice? Or is the price point savings on the parts enough to still make it cheaper overall?

Last year, I did a small Ren 64 Parts Co-op. As I recall, it saved about 30%. Not huge, but certainly worth it if you don't mind waiting. Of course, if you don't want to wait, it may not be worth it. If Chris does do a Ren 64 Co-Op, it will likely be much bigger and would provide a bit more savings. Because it does not have Triacs, the Ren 64 has the least impact from Co-Op.
Now, this post was about interest in a SSRez Group Buy. From the sounds of things, I'm guessing it will save nearly 50% over buying 16 SSRez parts kits directly from Mouser. The Triacs gets immensely cheaper when you get to large quantities.

you mean for the REN64? YES! The parts should qualify for free shipping since they will be very expensive for the whole order. I am thinking $40 + shipping you but I need to verify everything still. If you get it straight from mouser, you are looking at $52 + shipping to you. Even if we pay shipping from Mouser to me, the shipping cost gets washed a good bit since it is split between so many people.

You have it figured properly. Each outport port on the Olsen 595 (RJ45 connector) is designed to feed one 4 channel SSR board. If you have two Olsen boards, then you will need 16 SSRs for each board. I am new to this as well, but I have this part mastered. And it only took me 4 months. Gotta go... Christmas is getting close and I still have a lot to work on...

1 x Ren64 assembled and tested
1 x Ren16 assembled and tested
3 x Ren24SS PCB's with parts coming via Wayne's co-op
4 x SSRez's assembled and tested
1 x Ren64 PCB ready for parts
1 x Ren16 PCB ready for parts
3 x USB to RS232's
3 x RS232 to RS485's
1 x VAST FM02 (ordered not received yet)
1 x PICIT2 and other PIC goodies thanks to Kelly's co-op
which leaves...
28 x SSRez PCB's waiting for this co-op to launch!
Can't wait!

THE SSRez COOP is.......oops..not yet.
Okay, the interest is right...so I am trying to speed this up. However, I have to get my website running first so we have a place to do all this. Please be patient while I work through it and we will get this thing going!

Yeah, I know. Unfortunately the only "support group" I can find is this one which doesn't exactly do much to ease the addiction! ;)

I assume he's out of the country again and will have a large backlog of PMs when he gets back.

Gents,
The only thing holding this up right now is my website. I have a few folks working with me to fix the issues. I expect to get it going next week.
I will keep you updated!
thanks,
Chris
