I'm gonna put this in a nutshell.... As most of you know, I cancelled my display for 2010 for various reasons. I announced this on my website. It found it's way here ( Thanks for all the support! ;-) ). Someone here contacted my local paper. The paper ran a small article about it. The Town Commission read the article, and contacted me. We have been talking for a couple weeks, and after meeting today, James Family Christmas will be moving to downtown Mooresville!

Now.... I want to ask for everyones help. I would really appreciate your input on how you would decorate the lot I will be decorating. I have some ideas, but want to see what you guys can come up with. I still have to take an inventory of what lights I have, in addition to what is already in my display, which will be used. Here is a pictue of it..........

That is really good news Wayne. How about a Bellagio Fountain? It looks like you will have plenty of room. Anyway, I'm sure that what ever you come up with will look great.

Great news for the James family and the City of Mooresville.

Two questions...how much power is available and is there a shed to put the PC and fm transmitter indoors or are you going to be fully exposed? Okay, three questions I guess...does the city have an understanding of the traffic, noise, and litter that could be involved?
This may end your 'problem' of always having to layout your yard in the same manner every year. You may be able to get setup/teardown assistance from civic groups as well.

Not 100% sure, we are finding out, but the box you can see in the picture's lower right, looks to have either 100A or 200A service. There is already 6 outlets coming out of it. So I think power is not a problem.

Going to build a small shed (4X4?), decorate it as a Ginger Bread house or Santa's workshop to be the command center.

Discussed that today. I have made them aware of those potetial issues, and he knows that is why I shut down. He thinks it can be controlled if everything is planned properly.

Yes, I get help with setup/teardown. That alone is worth a ton!

Great News I'm really happy for you. Is that a sidewalk or a road at the far right of the picture? I guess what I'm getting at is how many viewing angles do you need to be concerned about? You sure have a lot of room for props, but not much structure to work with. Of course that tree has to be wrapped with tons of lights.

Really the "main" veiwing angle will be the same as the picture, BUT they would like it to be a nice display from any angle, as there is Main St at the end of the lot (where the cars are at in the pic), the sidewalk in the right of the pic that goes up to Main St. and a parking lot on the left of the pic.
No, no structure, not this year anyway. ;)

Awesome Wayne!! A total greenfield opportunity (pun intended). I can see dueling mega trees, a crazy number of mini trees with chasing lights everywhere! I am very happy that the James Family Christmas tradition lives on.

I'd take the approach of trees as the focal point. Center mega tree, and trees just a bit shorter flanking the mega tree, and so on. Tallest trees in back and center, spreading out and up as they get shorter. Also, many mini trees in patterns, say circles and large arcs. Strobes and ornament balls galore in the trees.

With the trees, you could go from left to right and back to front and vice versa.

Not a full idea, but the Santa in the window was the biggest hit of the year at my place. It was really easy to add Santa's occasional talk/sound to the music already playing (after Frank told me how!) over the FM.

I always thought a really cool design would be a tree farm. like the ones you see in empty lots with 2x4 trusses holding up trees.

just build alot of 6' trees... build some wooden trusses with light bulbs every 5' then animate it all.. would be awsome.

No, City Hall is just to the right of the sidewalk on the right side of the picture. That house is across the street.
This year just the lot, in the future.... who knows. ;)

First off I see that big tree being wrapped and the limbs made to dance to the beat..Secondly I see 2 snowmen having a huge snowball fight with their hats falling off...Thirdly I see a huge mega tree with lots of different colored presents...Forth I see leaping arches in 4 colors dancing all over the place.Fifth I see a Farris wheel (huge one) spinning around and around or a bear poking his head out of an igloo :-)...COuld be a great space to get jumpin...Congrats Wayne...All your hard work has certainly paid off...

P.S. All the above can be made with steel mesh (1 inch by 1 inch) welded to poles and rope light tied to it to make it hard to mess with.At the bottom of each you can place the controllers to control each piece in steel tamper proof pulldown boxes)...Just other ideas...

thats very cool wayne and it nice to hear you full of excitement again. I saw your monster controller at the philly mini in 08 and what a pice of artwork that was. Would be ashame for that to not be used.
I have a feeling you have already thought of a 100 or so micro trees but how about a left/right grid of 50 channels or so 1' apart and 2 strands per channel. A guy on our tour did a giant circle grid and had star shaped channels in there as well and that can be seen at

http://www.duszakfamilylights.com/the_krasleys_country_christmas.html

I have a feeling your community is going to have one heck of a show and the grandest of openings!

For a design, what is the town know for? Since its a "town" display maybe you could throw something about the town in there.

remember to spread the gap in the back if it 50' or more in length from front toback. 1' space in front and 2'space in back. Line it out with rope for visualization is you did do it.
Perspective would looke better if you did it that way.

I will have to get to thinking on that. A racecar could be fun, but kindof limiting. Maybe a wire frame prop of a pit crew changing a tire?

A different take on a mega-tree: I can see a multiple-segment trunk wrap of those big trees, perhaps 50% of the way up, and each segment has its own channel, then tangle/dangle/whatever multiple strings of lights up into the branches so that it looked like fireworks when you sequenced them upward.

It'd probably take 48 or 64 channels just to do one tree.

The Santa's Workshop as the controller base is a great idea, and could serve as storage in the off-season. Perhaps two, 8x4 sheds linked together would work, and they'd also be small enough to fit on a trailer for portability.

It'd sure be fun to design a 5-year project, and add things from year to year!

Are they planning to have a food drive or set up a donation center of any kind to help the community??

jrock64
01-10-2010, 01:28 AM
WOW, such a large blank slate.
I am going to assume you are going to have full 306 degree viewing.

I think the center piece needs to be 2 10 meter RGB MrPackethead mega trees.
I would surround those with vertical poles, multicolor or multichannel, your choice and then drape strands between the tops of the poles to form swags framing the trees.

Not to be a party pooper, I would make sure you have the city electrician and electrical inspector on board for this project.
This is going to be on city/public property and you may need to do some education, and or modification of your controllers and enclosures to gain their approval.

Dream big, and show them something they never believed possible.

I "see" two central mega trees, maybe 3 or 4 colors, 20-30' tall. Synchronized seperately, forgot who i saw did it, looked amazing. I see line of mini trees in the front, some larger arches toward the back, and some spotlights around, maybe accenting wooden cutouts, or wireframes.

Congrats Wayne, glad to hear it went through for you.

Okay, the race theme just gave me an idea. Instead of mini trees make mini cars. Line them up in a big circle or oval, maybe around the mega. Do them in 2 or 3 colors and you can animate a race between the colors or dance them around however you like.

race city usa? 2 color micro trees racing around for a minute or two to an audio clip of 2 race cars banging around your grid. medium trees can be the counter and every time they pass the mega tree it can whip into a spin in the color of the car/micro tree. Just off the top of my head but looks cool in my head. other features can be the croud ohiin and aahing during passes or tire screetches.

Here is what I have so far.....
Dual Mega Tree in the middle (20' tree with a 12' tree inside) then my two 6' trees beside. My 3' mini's in front, then the 50 micro trees making the big (60') circle

Still not sure what to do with my 5 arches. I am going to make a shooting star from one of the trees on the left to the far right of the lot.

For Wayne,

All I can tell you is the bodys were free handed at one time and originally tied with wire.
One complete 20ft peice of 3/8in rebar.
The center post is 1/2 inch.
I drive 1/2 pipe into the ground that the post fits into, so the lights are not shocked by being pounded into the ground each year.
Later they were welded, and the hats and arms were added.
Plan on 15 channels each, or 32 for the pair.
My ropelight had an 18in cut length so that is the length of rod I started out with to make the shoulders and arms.
Just free handed it until I thought it looked good then tried to get the rest about the same.
I think the balls are 3ft long to to get a good sized coil.
The body and arms are clear, and the snowballs are white because I had some leftover.

Remember, its a snowman, its not supposed to be perfect.

Joel

Note the three plug rule in action.
Never plug more than three wires into a triple tap.

Wayne,

One way to fill a large area and make it look good, not a lot of cost, and can be made to fit a many number of themes is with inflatables. They can be set up in groups, use lighting around them to add to or make scenes. Many different possibilities. I use seven in my display for Christmas and five for Halloween. My lights work with and accent them. I re-wire all of my inflatables seperating the blower from the lights. This way they can be inflated with out being on. I can then control the lights within making the part of the show without worring about them deflating. This also solves the problem of them being off overnight or during the day and getting covered with snow or ice and not being able to re-inflate for the show.

Wayne,

That is the best news I've heard in days.. I'm very happy for you!

I'd suggest a Christmas Lane theme, create a walking path winding its way through the display to consume a good portion of the real estate you need to cover, display would be placed far enough back to be safe, outline the path with half height hay bales, If you get enough snow to cover them, it would create a perfect barrier/walkway. If not a winding path then a 4 way entry leading to to the centerpiece (MegaTree?) with a walk around it. that way you could break the display into 5 sections.. Center and 4 pie shaped areas separated buy the paths.

Without an Aerial view, its hard to picture a good layout.

554 channels?

I have a tested Ren64XC5 and the 16 complete SSRoz units available to loan to you for this if required. just say the word.

Wayne, I have 6 large inflatables that I'm not going to use any more because of the sever winters we have, you can have them after I dig them out of the snow, just pay the shipping charges.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the offers. :) I pretty much have everything for this years show, except 64 Blue, 64 Red and 32 Green 100ct mini strings. I want to build the wire frame snowmen, so I have to figure up how much rope light that will take. I have a bunch, just need to inventory it.

It is not likely since it is not at my house. I will however try to get the videos up right after setup is done.

I think you should lean on Frank to borrow his 50' Mega Tree ........

Some random thoughts

Actually if you can find a HAM tower, if you are interested, I have all the pictures of our conversion to make the 40-50 MEGA tree. (like Frank our tree stood proud in the hurricane force winds)
Maybe make a Santa in a hot air balloon (wire frame)
Lot of Wire frames if you have them or can make them
Video of your sequences on an outdoor screen

Protecting the projector might be an issue
Ours was a rear projected Six Foot Video wreath

Flying Santa credit to Gary at www.bazzillionlights.com (http://www.bazzillionlights.com)
Snow Machine(s)
Shooting Stars
Lots of Mini Trees
Maybe add a Ztree(s)

All of my parts and enclosures finally came. I got 3 more built and tested last night. I'm gonna do a 24 next and then put those 5 in enclosures.

Congratulations Wayne! I couldn't think of a better win - win for you. I was heart broken to see someone so involved in this community giving it up because of others actions.
Look's like lot's of space, which means no limits to me ;-)

Wayne,

You said your building 36 boards. What type? If they're all Ren64 then thats 2,304 channels. Is that enough (ha! ha!). Whose going to do the programming? Good luck. And if you need any help and I can do it from 800 miles away, I'll try.

They are all SS boards. A mixture of 8's, 16's and 24's. Mostly 16's.

Jebus Wayne...

I logged in and read the thread Topic. All I could envision was Professor Farnsworth from Futurama. what a way to end the midnight shift.

Congrats on a great display this year! Whats on tap for next season?

Not sure. I will most likely be making a move this year (local) so, I may just take a break for this season.
