I have read a few different ways of doing smp soldering on a budget.
Has anyone tried these if so how did it go?

1 Toaster oven
2 Skillet
3 Modified desoldering iron http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/07/how-to-make-a-surface-mount-soldering-iron/

The main reason im asking is the modified disordering iron looks like something that would work for me,and is simple to build.

The de-soldering iron deal does look neat!

I did try the toster oven once to desolder some parts it does work but I kinda over cooked the plastic parts lol It takes practice...

I'm planning on trying the skillet this year.

As far as hot-air rework - Aoyue clones of Hakko hot air rework systems are so cheap (compared to what hot-air rework stuff used to be) that I'm likely to get one eventually and skip the modified desoldering unit approach.
