Hey all.
I had a 12 ch parallel port controller last year. Tested the computer on this today.... still works.
I have built 48 channel 595 this year. I have tried it with one and two 595's and 2803's plugged in..... every combination in Vixen.....5.2.volts and 4 volt battery.....
IT JUST WONT WORK :( :(
Any advice.....ready to shoot myself!!!!!
Plug to port wired from wrong end will cause hair to fall out :)

Make sure you have the ground of your power source tied to the ground of your PC. Also make sure you have your parallel port set to EPP in your BIOS.

Ta for the reply,,,,
In BIOS I have two options for the port:
1. Mode PS/2
**** I just found EPP in this are***** yeah!
2. I/O Address 378h
I have pins 18-25 of the port to my supply ground.
Should I tale one from the chassis of the computer as well????
You have no idea how much I appreciate your help :)
Many thanks
LG

Alright.....
port pins are grounded to the chasis...... just multi-metered them.
I have tried every combo of the parallel port.
I have tried the olsen 595 plugin and the simple 595 plugin.
I hate electonics.
Nothing EVER work 1st up :(
Any further advice appreciated.

You might get more eyes on this if you move the thread to the Olson 595 hardware forum instead of the Vixen forum.
If all else fails, try putting toggle switches or buttons on the inputs and manually bit-banging some data in.

Check the clock, data, and latch pins. There were some write-ups that were different from the schematic. How much cable is between the computer and the Olsen? If it is a laptop it might only be using 3.3 v on the parallel port.

When I used my laptop w/ 595 and old PC power supply I had to put a 180 ohm resistor on my 5v to 595 or nothing worked.
