we are setting up a Christmas float for the company I work at and we would like to have sequenced lights going to sleigh ride, so I bought this kit from http://www.electronickits.com/kit/complete/elec/ck1601.htm thinking it would work but I just realized the laptop computer we want to use it on doesn't have a parallel port, can I use a parallel to usb/serial converter with vixen for it to work or is there anything else I can do?

Unfortunately, you're going to need a 'hardware' parallel port. Vixen writes to the I/O locations for the parallel port to do the bit banging. The USB converter abstracts that.
I'm afriad you'll have to find a salvage computer somewhere with a 'real' parallel port.

There is also a serial version of the board at the same site.
I think you could put a programmed PIC in front to convert a serial port signal to a parallel signal, something like the Renard does (only for dimming). On/off through the transistors would be possible.

Thanks for the Info, actually I do have an old desktop laying around that can be used, but I just got a email from carlselectronics today saying the board is out of stock, so I could buy one of those serial boards or is there any better boards out there in the below 50$ price range?

Mr Chippy,
Will the float have an AC Source, like a generator?
The Serial connected solutions like a RENARD, normally use a signal from the AC, to know when to switch on the lights and make them dim.
The REN64, is a 8-64 channel controller. I have some PCBs if you need one.

Yes the Float will have an Ac Generator aboard, how much does Pen64 cost and does it come will all the Components?
