I am redesigning my whole show for next year and I am taking another stab at picking a theme for the display. (I pick a theme every year to give me some narrowing of options… I just can’t choose between everything every time) I had great feedback after adding the “Santa in the window” this year and I am thinking I’d like it to be the centerpiece next year.
I am seeking advice (input, ideas, things that have worked for you, etc) on what to include in my 2010 “North Pole” themed display. One thing I think would be fun is a mailbox (illuminated, of course!) for letters to Santa. Obviously, I’ll need a north pole (show me what you have used, please) and some trees, elves, and snowmen.
What else would really say “North Pole” ?

How about something like an ice pond with Snoopy, Lucy, etc skating (animated figures), set to the Linus and Lucy song?

Or, an animated Polar Express train, with Santa or gifts/animals/etc?

Maybe also an animated thermometer, and the "mercury" could move up and down to the music, or the thermometer itself could even sway back and forth to the beat.

Dancing penguins might also be entertaining.

Boy, am I glad I asked! Those are great ideas, Don. Thank you.

Here is another one...

Perhaps you could frame part of the display as a large "snow globe". A big arch could form the outline of the glass, one or more scenes would be inside the globe (mini trees, north pole, penguins, pond, etc), and then strobes or dangling icicles (moon tubes, cosmic strips, or whatever you want to call them) could be suspended as the backdrop to look like the snow inside the snow globe after it has been shaken.

EDIT: also, singing or dancing snowmen.

I made a pair of north poles this year.
They are around 2 metres tall, they use 24 Channels each.
I used 150mm PVC pipe and cut up rope light into 1 metre lengths
The people watching seemed to really like them.

If your doing a NORTH POLE scenario ,then, you MUST include the momma and baby Coca Cola polar bears drinking a bottle of Coke

Somehow you will have to add the 7 levels of the candy cane forest.

If you are still looking for ideas, I just saw a nice looking prop than combines a train with north pole theme on http://theholidaylightstore.com, but you could probably make something similar:

I like it ... keep the ideas coming if you see something I could use. I am only half way to the North Pole so I still need help!

If global warming keeps going, the North Pole will be coming to you! Montana could become the waterskiing capital of the world!

Well, maybe not...

I was thinking about this, and what is at the North Pole? A toy factory so a large sign in rope light, gotta have the good and bad list, Santa sleigh would be cool if you could have like a conveyor belt with presents going into the sleigh, Elves maybe a mega candy cane. Instead of mini trees try mini lollipops and thats all for now....

Hi:
Hate to throw cold water--oops--snow, on the project, but penguins are only at the South Pole. Maybe you could put up a "globe"? Maybe someone is exporting penguins to the North Pole? You must be "geographically correct", otherwise Santa will bypass your house.

Seriously, looks like you got some good suggestions. I try to work on a theme basis too, but I've only done this one year. Next year (next season?) is still on paper. My wife sez do a "Drummer Boy" theme. Might be hard to beat.

Hi:
Yeah, Dirk will probably tell me to take my drum and beat it!

Hey, that video on the North Poles by Tabor is something else. He did a terrific job on those. Some people have all the talent.

Check out thewinfieldcollection.com

They have a bunch of reindeer and eleves that I would like ot use if I was to do a North Pole theme. I personally would like to use the baby reindeer and prancers toy overload.

Here's some pictures of a static display that always reminds me of the North Pole. I think this gent really does a great job.

edit: I take that back - maybe it's not so static after all; just saw the sign for the radio frequency he's using.

Now that's enough of that depressing attitude.

You need to think about something more UPBEAT...

Hi Dirk,
I have to agree with IdunBenhad that penguins are 100% wrong geographically.

But someone in our town made a bunch of penguins out of plastic Coke bottles, and they looked great. They also did an igloo out of chickenwire and polystyrene.

By "some guaranteed source" of mine there will be a new general theme in 2010 called
"ATLANTIK"
It will be a total remake of now not produced Aqua-zone.
