As promised (I think) I'm working on my Rockband Drumkit and Guitar release
So far, I only have it working for the Olsen 595 protocol.
What I have down so far is a standard Windows application. Serverside and Clientside.
The serverside exe runs on the control computer (where the Olsen/Grinch is plugged into) and it receives data from the client to turn on and off channels
(It is fast if it's ran from a local computer to a local computer, I haven't tested an internet environment yet)
You select 5 channels for the drumkit (4 pads and a bass pedal)
You select 5 channels for the guitar (each) (5 frets)
I will have a working video and pictures soon. I will release it once it's more user-friendly. I hope to get it done before everyone's done with their displays!
I would take a video tonight, but it's 3 AM :P

If you really want DIY... interface to "http://www.megadrum.info" ;)
Now you can have your kit sitting outside in the middle of all of your lights and put on a REAL show!

Cool bananas! Is this a console specific thing or any of the rock band controllers? (Curious because I have a PS3. . . . and a member of The Beatles ;) hehehehe)

Oh I'm sorry for not mentioning it.
It uses a USB Controller (I Think PS3's use that now-a-days)

Just a thought - you could use your interface in a less "guitar hero" way..
Because the PS3 drumkit (and megadrum) is essentially a "piezo" trigger device, embedded in the rubber mat as the trigger - why not use the same theory to trigger visitor feedback to your lights?
My thinking was:
what if you put rubber "safety-fall" mats down your walkway - with a piezo embedded in each square - and as someone walks along, it turns on a corresponding light/floodlight shining on that mat... add PWM and the harder they walk(jump?) the brighter the light? Kids would love it!
Get the right combination - and it plays XYZ sequence..
I'm thinking an homage to Michael Jackson "Billy Jean" filmclip on your sidewalk - or like the piano in the movie "Big".
taking it too far?!

I would love to do that, but sadly I live on a busy street (don't even have a sidewalk!)
Sounds like something I can do for the fun of it though!

OK... maybe extrapolate the idea... no footpath... how about a "light controlling brickwall/picket fence"?
The piezo mounted to the back of a fence pailing should be sensitive enough to pick up someone tapping on a picket fence... make a 16key piano out of it! The list is endless.
The nice part is that the piezo trigger will work over a very fine wire - you could hide it from vandals even!
Don't get me wrong about the PS3 interface... love the idea! -
This project has triggered[pun intended] a whole stack of grey-matter neurons... and whilst at "wjohn"'s place last night I saw a whole court full of kids running around (mine included)- and a level of feedback that gets the kids immersed - that has got to be for the common good!
Maybe the next step-up from music syncro?!
You could even use the trigger to use SSR's to run animatronics rather than lights!
The "thot plickens" - all food for thought - I've done none of it...so just offering suggestions ;)
This reminds me of something i was going to work on for our church annual picnic. I was going to make a plexiglass floor, with cubes, and have them light up for a dance floor. Kindof Disco like, but you could control it, and even play games on it such as Twister etc.

*puts on his Scrooge Hat*
I'm all for development of new interfaces but I guess I tend to have a warped view of things at times.
Combine This (http://www.jamesfamilychristmas.com/) with what your developing and tell me again why I would want to even consider inviting something like this into my display...?
I'm encouraging people to come and watch the display and leave happy, not invite them for a jam session in my driveway where a couple of carloads like Wayne had show up at the same time figuring its their right to dominate the equipment. I foresee a serious issue there..
